network benchmarking and settings

how come whenever sites benchmark networking they dont include which settings?and what do all those settings like 32DWORDS do?I know what a DWORD is but is that like they send 32 16bits at once?
windows when it is first set up defaults to 16DWORD I suppose that this is not the ideal setting?
