Network Bandwith monitoring tool

With all this talk of bandwidth caps I'm curious as to how much bandwidth I actually use in a month. I know it's fairly heavy, but I don't really have any idea what it really is.

Do any of you know of some good free software that I can use to monitor how much I am using? I don't have a router that will support monitoring it at that point (it's a D-Link DSL-2540B modem/router), so I think the only other solution is some software that I install on each computer connected to the internet. Does that sound about right?
