Does anyone know a place selling these kinds of devices? Any links would be appreciated.

Does anyone also know of a place with DIY kits for these (has barebones, just need to plug in an IDE cable)? I like having lots of network storage, but would rather that storage in a non-server if possible. All of my storage is currently in a server and I want to make that machine into something more usable instead of just storage/ftp/http.

Gateway, believe it or not, was actually selling one. It was an ide network storage device. What type of drives are you looking for scsi, ide? I would look at some of the big drive makers like IBM, maxtor, seagate, and then check pricewatch to see if anything comes up (they have a couple places that carry them and they start off at about $700).

Here is the Gateway link;

Save up to $600 on the GS400 Storage System

Personally for that kind of money I'd rather buy a system and go scsi.

I'm actually looking for a "bare" NAS kit, where I can drop in any device I want (namely, one ide drive). Most of the systems I have seen from IBM are racked mounted, which is beyond what I need. This is mainly for soho, so I'm not talking enterprise applications here.

I have seen the Snap storage and MaxAttach and they are both beyond what I am looking for (again, looking for barebones kit). The lowest price I have seen for these devices is about $200 (reasonable, considering its a complete box in there).

Any other links?

So basically you are just looking for a case and that's it?

Sorry the only thing I have found are the ones you have already pointed out.

I now realize that this is perfect. Is there a way to have a NAS CD-ROM? How much that would cost?

You can have a NAS cdrom, usually they're referred to as cd towers. That's all I know tho, only seen one in service, never priced... sorry

I've had a LOT of experience with CD-ROM towers. Have used one at EVERY job I've ever had. And they have always been the bane of my existence. SLOW, buggy and expen$ive as CR@P!

I switched my current place of employment to a "virtual" CD-server, which is basically a turnkey sharing appliance running a *nix flavor.
Can serve to PC, Mac, *nix, etc. Web-based management primarily, with some CD "loading" utilities.

It's called a Disczerver VT, and was made by Microtest.
I say MADE because they stopped making and supporting their NAS division in August of 2001.
We're looking at possible replacement options now, in the eventuality that it blows sky-high...

Performance is ORDERS of magnitude better than a mechanism based tower. Also, since it's a self-contained box with it's own OS, it doesn't require a host server (which host-dependent boxes tend to make crashy and RAM-starved).
