Network Attached Storage

I am working to attach a Network Attached Storage (NAS) unit to my home network. It looks like I can get a 1TB RAID 1 (2 drive) unit for $350 versus a 2 TB RAID 5 (4 drive) system for $1000. I was thinking of buying the 1TB as this is all I currently need with plans to add another TB or two on to the USB port in the future if my needs increase. My question is, how much slower(i.e. will it be noticeable without testing) will my set-up be if I add HD in serial?

Thanks.
