Network Attached Storage projects for a linux box???

Um, calling it by a fancy name doesn't make it anything different.

You basically want a server. And any Linux distro will serve you well as a server OS.
 
yeah, i know that much, but what i was looking for was something simple (you know, like the router on a floppy type stuff, lrp and freesco) for a friend of mine a few thousnd miles away thats not so fluent in linux.
 
Tell your friend to buy a damn book and learn Linux.

Jesus, this stuff is not very hard. Everyone has to undergo training and pass tests in order to get a driver's license. Why are people so averse to learning when it comes to using computers, which are thousands of times more complicated than cars?

P.S. Stop saying meaningless crap like Networked Extensible Attached Storage XML Device Appliance Service. One of these days you will get your ass kicked for being so pompous.
 
He's not asking a question. He basically wants to know how he or a friend can use Linux without learning to use Linux. And that's not really possible.

He's also using meaningless buzzwords to describe a darn server, which is what pissed me off.
 
Um, those are overpriced servers. Of course, when they call it something other than a server, idiots like you buy into it. "Oooh! It has a bullsh!t name! It must be a premium product!"
 
I work at IBM , and I know for a fact that NAS boxes are not SAME as a regular server. They take
the same shell of a server, but it requires different version of BIOS, and different hardware configuration. It's not a fancy smancy name, it's actually marketted that way. Please if you must act arrogant, gets your facts straight.

 
There are a zillion different BIOS versions and hardware configurations out there. OEMs get stock BIOS images from the BIOS or mobo manufacturers, and tweak them for their needs. So of course every manufacturer is going to use its unique BIOSes and hardware configurations. A company the size of IBM can afford to tweak different BIOSes for different product lines in order to maximize performance. But this doesn't change the simple fact that a server is still a server regardless of what you call it.

I suspect that you're working at a software position at IBM, and that's all well and good, but please don't try to make insightful comments about hardware when your expertise is in software. Your comments end up being not so insightful.
 
No, I dont work in a "software" position at IBM. I work in the functional verification Testing. I interact with these servers on a day to day basis.

But believe what you will, i prefer not to waste any more of my time on this thread since my comments are not "insightful" to you sir. you are right and we are wrong. Congrats.
 
Hey Sniper, are you looking for software to make a Linux server into a NAS or are you looking for a NAS to connect to a Linux server?

If the former, I really don't know of too many programs that are turn-key. You can always do it by hand and set up a NAS (either for Linux/Unix or Windows). If you are looking for a NAS that uses Linux, then there are a few out there.

If the latter, then let me say that almost any NAS will work for Linux. Most NAS that I've seen have NFS/NIS and SAMBA capabilites. Then again, I'm no NAS expert.

There is one called OpenNAS which advertizes a lot. 1 Tera Byte for around $23.000.
I think Einux also has some small NAS servers.
VA Linux is also in the Linux NAS market.

i was looking for something that would make a Linux server into a NAS. I haven't heard of any projects in to works to make it easy (like the freesco router thing), thats all
