Network and SATA cables, cheap vs expensive

I wanted to pick up some Cat6 and SATA cables, and I see some cheap cables and some expensive ones.

Cat 6, 14ft, ranging from Link Depot's $2 to Cables Unlimited's $12.

SATA II, 18" long, ranging from Rosewill's $2 to Nippon Lab's $7.

Is there any difference between the cheap stuff vs the expensive stuff for home use? If not, what kinds of situations would the expensive stuff make a difference?

I go for the cheapest ones (item plus shipping), as long as they have the features I want. (Like integrated strain relief and boots on the network cables). Locking clips on the SATA cables might be nice.

Without expensive measurement equipment and some endurance testing, there's really no way to know for sure. You can look at reviews on places like Newegg.com for obvious flaws or poor reputations.

Done is one reply. go cheap. if you want a 200+ run, then you may want to consider longer cables.

The only complaint I have about so SATA is elbow vs straight. Just need to make sure they fit into your case properly.

Generally speaking I've found cables to be cables, you could also check out Monoprice.com for good prices on quality cables.

Exeinsive cables belong to two categories.

1. Just taking advandege of ignorant consumers.

2. Cables that has some value in special circumstances.

In case of the SATA special circumstances would relate to the value of the plugs.

If a cable is used for frequent plug unplug configuration, you need a cable with better plugs than some of the flimsy cheappos.
