Network and router connectivity lost...

Having a strange problem with my Comcast connection. I'm at work posting this, so unfortunately I don't have the model number of the cable modem I have...it's a Scientific Atlanta that I've been using for a couple of years if that helps at all. Everything's been fine, but about 2 weeks ago I started just losing internet access. Can't browse to any sites, can't connect via FTP to anything external, etc... Absolutely no external connectivity. The lights on the cable modem seemed normal, the lights on the router (Netgear WRTG54) seemed fine. I could connect to the computers on my local network, but (and here's the strange part) I could NOT ping my router or connect to it's mgmt. interface through the web browser. Attempts at connecting to it resulted in time outs. Attempts at pinging it would also time out. The only way to restore connectivity to the router and the internet was to power off both the router and cable modem, wait a few seconds, restore power, and everything would be fine...until it did it again. This went on for a week or so, and I thought OK, it's just the router crapping out, I'll replace it.

Friend had a spare Linksys (BEFW11S4) that have gave me, so I disconnected the Netgear and started using the Linksys. Everything worked fine...for a couple of days...then it started doing the same thing. The exact same problem...internet connectivity is lost, can't ping the router or connect to it's mgmt. interface, but I can still ping and remote into machines on the local network.

Seeing as how my machine and the others on the same local network still have connectivity, I've pretty much ruled out a problem with them. I did change out the cable connecting the router to the modem, but still get the problem, so I'm ruling out that cable. Having tried 2 routers and still having the same problem I've ruled them out as well. The only thing left I can think of is the cable modem...but could that possibly prevent me from connecting to or pinging the router? The cable modem is split from the wall, so I guess perhaps that splitter could be bad...but again, how would it cause the problem connecting to the router from my local machines?

I called Comcast, asking if I could either stop by and get a replacement modem, or if a tech could drop one off, but of course they wanted to try troubleshooting from their end...and since I'm at work I can't exactly power off the modem and power it back on as they requested. So I'll have to call them later, but thought perhaps someone here would be able to share some insight in the meantime. Any suggestions??

Thanks,
Tom
