Network Adapters disappear after installing USB Wireless Adapter

I had a defective hard drive in an old Dell Inspiron 5000, so I replaced with 40gb samsung from Newegg. Setup Windows XP, works great, went to install new Gigafast Wireless USB Adapter (WF748-UI) and installed drivers from cd that came with it. These are the latest I have as their website doesn't even list this product. Then when I plug in the wireless usb adapter, it said detected and installed the device, then popped up with something that said "Network interface might be disabled or removed." I look in control panel -> system -> device manager and I don't see any network adapter. I take it back out, uninstall drivers and utility and insert the usb adapter and it shows up as unknown device under network adapter in control panel. Install drivers manually, and it shows 802.11g wireless lan adapter under network adapter for one second then disappears and does nothing! I'm speechless. Any help please? The laptop has no other forms of connecting to the internet other than a phone line jack w/ modem.
