Are there any new issues with networking win 95 machines with an XP machine?

This was all working fine for months. I didnt use the network for a while, and now the 95 machines will talk to each other, but NOT to the XP machine..

The only major change I can think of was adding DSL to the XP machine, but all the settings seem like they should work..

HELP! Ive tried all day to get this working!!

(btw, xp can ping the win95's but not vice versa)

Did you disable the firewall on XP? If so, have you considered installing NETBEUI on all of the computers?

As best I can tell the firewall is off, but maybe I'm mistaken. Easy way to check? I'm using XP Pro.

The problem is that XP wont see the 95 machines either, so a firewall isn't the issue there.

It did work without NETBEUI, so am hoping to make it work again as it was. Do you strongly suggest adding NETBEUI?

Is there any chance that adding .NET framework screwed up networking somehow??

I just did that too..

FWIW, even though browsing worked once, that's the nature of the retarded Microsoft browsing scheme, one day you boot all the systems up, and some of them disappear from the network! Adding NETBEUI solves this issue most of the time, since it periodically broadcasts it's ID for all to see. It also hops most firewalls, since it's not TCP/IP/ :D

I can't answer the question on NET framework, I've avoided that pig like the plague! :D

So I installed NETBEUI. Maybe a little better?

In network neighborhood, the 95 machines see the drives on the XP box BUT if I click on one of these drives, I get the error "an extended error has occurrced".

The XP drives are shared and no firewall seems to be up.

The GOOD news is that the XP machine now seems to see the 95's. (just nto vice versa)

ANY tips woudl be a big help.

Any chance I have added DSL the wrong way? I have a 8 port router(?). I just have all the machines plugged into it and the DSL modem too. Seems like that's the right way, yes?

I haven't looked at W95 networking in a long time, and it may have issue that I don't realize with XP. Points to ponder:

Do you log into the W95 workstations with a name and password?
Do you use Microsoft Client at your login client?
Is there an account on the XP box for each of the W95 machines name/password?
Do the accounts on the XP box have permissions to access the shared resources?

That's about all the things that come to mind.

>Do you log into the W95 workstations with a name and password?

No, wide open.

>Do you use Microsoft Client at your login client?

Cant recall. These boot right up with no pause for login, s I think thats the MS client.

>Is there an account on the XP box for each of the W95 machines name/password?

Admin acct only with all shares set unlessI am missing something somewhere

>Do the accounts on the XP box have permissions to access the shared resources?

Yes.

I'm see that whatever I try to do, the XP drives cannot be shared with the 95 machines. Maybe only after adding .NET - not sure.

Oddly the CDR can be shared. No issues at all.

TCP/IP seems to work as I can now browse the web on the 95 machines. The XP box has the DSL connection.

Just can't access the XP drives from either 95 machine.

Try logging into the W95 machine with a name/password, make sure you're using Microsoft Client, establish an account for that machine on the XP machine with proper permissions, and make sure you have NETBEUI on both the XP machine and the W95 machine. It should connect.
