Netspeak...What do you think of it?

Basically, it's using words like BRB, ttyl, LOL, cuz, b4, ur, etc and the use of emoticons and not capitalizing words.
Do you guys use it when chatting on IM and what effect do you think it has on kids and teenagers? Comments are welcome 🙂
Personally, I used to use a lot of the chatting jargon, only recently I've been typing everything normally.

Netspeak1
Netspeak2
Netspeak3

It demonstrates sheer stupidity quite nicely. I feel like slapping the sh!t out people that type like that.

I concur.

I'll use 'lol' occasionally over icq, or sometimes 'pwn' to annoy. That's about it. No emoticons.

I despise net-speak.

No emoticons? I use emoticons because I think it converys something that's not very easy to express in typing and it's so simple. Also, can be used to show when sarcasm/joking is intended since sarcasm doesn't travel too well on the net.

I don't really use IM except for between coworkers when they're on the phone as I find it annoying to be constantly bothered by people, but I have been known to use LMAO or LOL on this forum.

I agree, although I do use emoticons. I generally insist on decent spelling, grammar and punctuation. If I have time (i.e. not an IM) I will spell check my scribblings, even if it means going through all the trouble of opening word (gasp)!

Generally I limit it to 😀, 🙂, lol, rofl, and lmao.

Sort of like me, except I've been typing everything grammatically correct on IM (capitalization and no acronyms). I try to keep my use of emoticons to a minimum, the same with lol... I don't use rofl, and lmao.

I used to hate emoticons, but then some people got mad at me because they thought I was serious when I was joking, so I started using them, but I still do it rarely. They look goofy to me. But I am, 99% of the time, a grammar, capitalization, punctuation Nazi. I do, however, use some shorthand, but it's usually stuff like lol, stfu and a few other ones a group of friends and I developed. It gives me hives when people use 'ur', 'gr8', etc.

Oh, and stuff like gr8 and 4eva certainly aren't new and aren't only net-speak terms. They've been around for a long time, they've just migrated here.

I absolutly hate people who use stuff like b4, ur, u, y, gr8, as it isn't that much more work to type out and you look like a moron when you use it. I don't mind emoticons since thats the ony way you can tell someone if you're joking or not. Your text loses a lot of what your face, body language and tone of voice show off in person. I use lol very rarely (usualy prefering a heh), but lol is kinda a necessary evil. Its not like you can send the sound of laughter to the person you're talking to.

The only real abreviations I don't mind are brb, and afk type stuff, since it's not choping up a word, just shortening a phrase that people tend to use a lot.

Could someone come up with a nice sentence that uses a lot of "netspeak" words. I came up with this... " ne1 up 4 a game w/ a l33t newb b4 i go?" Try to make the sentence readable to those not used to Netspeak. thanks.

Agreed. I almost immediately discount any post here that looks like "R U going 2 the N'Sync show 2nite?"
