Netscape is TOAST!

Don't you mean firebird? Or is there another new name this week?

I'm curious where the Mozilla name originated. I'm guessing it has a long history, since it is mentioned in pretty much every browser, IIRC.

I thought it was just a clever play on "godzilla". I'm not really to sure about its origins though.

A quick googlization of the name reveals this usenet thread with the answer.

And the beast shall come forth surrounded by a roiling cloud of
vengeance. The house of the unbelievers shall be razed and they shall be
scorched to the earth. Their tags shall blink until the end of days.

And the beast shall be made legion. Its numbers shall be increased a
thousand thousand fold. The din of a million keyboards like unto a great
storm shall cover the earth, and the followers of Mammon shall tremble.

That's what I mean 🙂

Yes, all browsers send Mozilla/* user agents, as far back as NS2 or earlier. Mosaic is not mentioned in any browser user agent except for Mosaic 😉

edit: couple examples:

Mozilla/2.0 (compatible; MSIE 2.0; Windows 3.11; DigExt)
Mozilla/2.0S (X11; I; IRIX 6.2 IP22)
Mozilla/2.0 (compatible; MS FrontPage 4.0)
Mozilla/2.0 (compatible; MSIE 3.01; Windows 95)

The Mozilla/* thing doesn't seem to go back any earlier than netscape 2.

The mozilla project is the mozilla project, their main browser was mozilla for a long time, now it's firebird, but it is "Mozilla Firebird". Mozilla is the project, firebird is their browser.

Interesting, maybe they took it out in newer versions. Here in 1.0x I get a red screen with white text saying:

I think that I remember that being there in earlier versions too 😕

At one point I think I knew the origin of the Mozilla name but I've forgotten it like so many other things.

Anyway, Mozilla has always been the source of every Netscape browser for... erm... forever I think. And to my knowledge Mozilla isn't owned by AOL. If any of you get homesick for Netscape (assuming it goes away) just get Mozilla, since it's very damn similar but with a lot more features. (Can we say popup blocker?)

Oh, Firebird is just the name given to the browser itself, kind of like Navigator is the name given to the Netscape browser. As far as I can tell anyway. I have yet to find any real differences in the browser you get with the full Mozilla suite and the standalone Firebird.

Mozilla doesn't install aol, realplayer, and winamp by default when you install it. Netscape sucks for that reason alone.

It's gotten that bad already? Yeesh... I'm glad I switched to Moz the instant I heard AOL had bought Netscape. Yeeesh.

Heh, netscape installs all that now?

I suppose, as always, you shouldn't use phrases as general as "anyone who thinks [....]", so I should say that it should have read "Most people who think [...]".

I get that too with Firebird 0.6. I wonder if there's more...
