I was thinking about upgrading to netscape 6. Is it worth the time?

I don't have a good feeling about "revolutionizing" products. That's what the netscape.com site was saying about it.

I installed it just to check it out. Turns out I like IE 5.5 better. Netscape 6 is still kind of clunky, like the previous versions.

edit - One thing that pisses me off to no end about IE 5.5 is how it says 'Done' when a webpage is still loading.

I installed it and felt it was like Netscape took IE and slapped an IE label on it. It even accepts and rejects the same bad code that IE accepts and rejects (depending on typo). SCARY! But I like it and I get to use the superior Netscape E-Mail program, so I think it's a keeper.

Hasn't crashed yet either (knock on wood).

Actually good point hubbs! With mozilla you get essentially netscape 6 without all the extra crap like AIM. The other thing I'll say is that it seems considerably faster than netscape 6. The only thing I dislike about netscape 6/mozilla.......how can I make all new windows open maximized? None ever open maximized and its sooooo annoying!

That windows opening small thing is a known bug, there's nothing you can do unless you're a programmer. Also, Mozilla is far superior to Netscape 6, especially if you keep current with the nightly builds. You can see daily reviews Here.

Well, I installed Nutscrape 6.0 on a Win2k box, and it keep freezing whenever I visited msdn.microsoft.com. I wonder why?? :D

Anyway, IE 5.5 sp1 is way better. However I hear 6.0 is round the corner...

So hopefully things will get better.. And if with 6.0 we can essentially get a VB or C enviroment with a browser all us programmers will be quids in.

Cheers

After trying out Netscape 6 &quot;release version&quot; on both Linux and Windows I have come to the conclusion that it just plain isn't done yet. I think AOL (owner of Netscape) forced Netscape to release the product since it had been in beta so long. I have heard a number of people agree with this statement. It seams to me that Netscape 6 is the most buggy software ever to come from Netscape in the form of a final release. I would wait for updates before using it.

Oh, for those that like to talk about IE being built-in to the OS, IE certainly isn't built into my OS! In fact, it doesn't even run in my OS and I like it that way!

heh..

first off, Don't bother with netscape, go Mozilla, it's got less extra crap, PLUS, you can download the whole package in one file, rather then downloading a setup file that downloads the rest when you run it.

my only problem with Mozilla thus far is that it takes too long to respond to commands, ie, open in new window is instantaineous in Netscape 4.x (don't know where you get 'clunky' out of Netscape 4.x).

it's features are pretty sweet, though it takes up quite a bit of memory as well (streamlining would be a good thing).

I guess I could try to get a nightly build.. I have Milestone 18 currently, which is the one that is in Netscape 6 now..

Do you guys know how to get the scroll mouse to work in Netscape 6 without holding down control?

N6 is what happens when you go from an alpha to gold without having the beta versions in between.

So in other words N6 is really N6-beta1. And it sucks at that too.

I'm no IE fan either, but I won't give up my 4.74 for N6.

no such thing as upgrading to netscape 6, its a downgrade!! some web pages just dont display properly w/ netscape 6. and im not talkin about complex coding, im talkin about tables, images being misinterpreted, plain and simple.

I still prefer Netscape 4.76 and IE 5.01. With 4.76 i felt that Netscape was just about stable enough, in stability terms Netscape 6 feels like i have fallen to the bottom of the stability hill and have to walk up it again.

I perfer the IE 5 came with win2k

I have tried 5.5 but it has a bug i think, it scrolls webpages with &quot;flash' on them very slowly on my computer. Try www.hardocp.com and that is an example. Suddenly feels like i am using a 386. I uninstalled and continued to use 5.01 sp1

Ihave got N6, i found it acceptabe. Pretty stable but HELL SLOW.

NS6 has alot of potential. I am still run 4.7 for stability, but I have to admit, I like the new netscape.

Actually I have to agree with the Mozilla guys. I downloaded the most recent mozzila build, and it seems to be the best of both worlds. An interface more like the original Netscape with the new gecko engine.

As a long time Netscape user.. I've always thought that if someone would create a Netscape interface with the IE engine then all would be well.... most of us Netscapers are just very comfortable with the interface. as long as the engine is fully compatible and fast enough, I'll be OK.

I downloaded Netscape 6 the other night and tried it....slooooow. I kind of liked the format but it was horrible when changing pages...took forever. Netscape 4.76 is far superior in my opinion. Never liked Explorer....mostly because i've never used it long enough to learn it. ohhh and my web access is fast....can dowload a fifty meg file in under three minutes so that wasn't the problem

I stick with IE 5.5 and Netscape 4.7, I think that Netscape 6 is just plain crap. It has a built in AOL IM and it sucks bad also. It doesn't have any of the features that the standalone AOL IM has. I also don't like the design of the interface, it doesn't suit me. I like using IE 5.5 because it is more compatible with everything else. I also like the memory feature on the text boxes.

Actually you can download the whole Netscape 6 in one file, from the Netscape FTP site.
ftp4.netscape.com/pub/netscape6/english/6.0/windows/win32/sea

Its 25mb.... I wish Microsoft would allow this, I hate LiveSetup or whatever they call it.

jfall: My scroll works in NS6. Strange.

josphstalinator: Give me ONE example. I've got one for you! Look at http://www.datldoit.com/hotstuff.htm in IE, then Netscape 4.x. The navbar doesn't work in Netscape 4.x. I don't fault Netscape for this, I fault Dat'l Do It for bad code, but since Netscape 6 has the same tolerance for bad code that IE has, it WORKS in NS6! I've never had a page that worked in IE not work in NS6, so again I ask you to give me an example.

Here's another example for you: Look at <a target=new href="http://www.viahardware.com
">http://www.viahardware.com</a> in an old version of Netscape and then look at it in Netscape 6. Does it load at all for you in old Netscape 4.x? Doesn't for me. Works in 6, though.

beb: Slow? It's actually faster because old Netscapes would wait until the images INSIDE a table would load before loading the table or anything after the table. NS6 will load the images when they load and allow everything around the images to load as well. For this, it's been FASTER for me. Then again, I'm on broadband so most things aren't slow to start with. ;)

Mule: You never even tried it did you? Because if you did, then you would no that 1) AOL IM is NOT built in. During a custom install, you simply don't check the IM box. 2) You can load the Classic Skin for NS6 so it looks JUST LIKE NS 4.x. 3) IE 5.5 is compatible with a lot of things because a lot of webmasters have bad form and don't follow W3C guidelines and IE is tolerant to these typos, but NS now allows these same errors of bad form so all of the same &quot;compatabilities&quot; are there (see examples left for josphstalinator). 4) NS6 has form memory too. Every password box you fill out or any fill in the blank you do, NS will ask you if you want to remember the data punched in. But you didn't know that because you really didn't try it, did you?

It seems almost as if no one here has really even tried it, but wants to bad mouth it anyway. :(

Zealots.

It bites...freezes on my system all the time, and most of the time won't even open! Don't like it one bit, though I did notice an increase in load speed on some web pages...

I agree with you there. There's some bug there that I can't put my finger on.

At home it works GREAT (see last post), but at work I installed it and when I fire it up, the Netscape 6 logo just sits in the middle of the screen. If I CTRL/ALT/DEL I'll have a &quot; Not Responding&quot; on Netscape 6.

Go figure. Maybe a patch there, but I wonder what the compat. issue is.
