What protocol? TCP/IP? Are they in the same IP ranges (192.168.1.x), do they have the same subnet? Do they have the same workgroup name? Do they both have file sharing enabled?

What file system is Windows 98? I may be wrong but difference in file systems causes problems some times.

It is a tricky thing to do at times. I've found that you have to turn on one computer and then boot the other in order for a direct connection to work (I forgot which you have to turn on first, probably the Win 98 computer). But really, what is the problem you have, and how are you trying to connect them?

first, you need a crossover cable, unless you're using a hub/switch. You don't need tcp/ip. You only need NETBEUI and enable file and print sharing.

In order for the 98 to see the XP, you may need to create an account on the XP machine that cooresponds with the login on the 98 box.

Make sure the workgroup names are the same on both computers.
