duel booting am using this card for a seriel port for the modem. that I bought specifically for linux.

card is showing up in devices in ubuntu but modem is not being detected.
searching I have turned this up.

NetMos Technology PCI 9835 Multi-I/O Controller (rev 01)
This is a 2 serial, 1 parallel port PCI I/O card. While it works with Linux, it does not work ?out of the box?. You have to do some manual configuration. The CD that comes with the card does have Linux install instructions. But if you are running the 2.6.x kernel, all you have to do is add parport_serial to /etc/modeprobe.preload, and the ports are configured for you. I did not try 2.4.x kernels with it.

On my system, the two serial ports became ttyS4 and ttyS5. The parallel port became lp1. This may be different on your system. The logs will show the port assignments. If you have a fairly standard system, you will probably get the same results. I have the usual 2 serial and 1 parallel port on the mother board. So they get ttyS0, ttyS1, and lp0. I don't have anything on ttyS2 and ttyS3

it is indeed a 9835 netmos although there is only one serial port when windows detected it also showed an unuseable parallel port.
and this is a 2.6xx kernal of course.
the options for modem that show up in ubuntu are ssty 0-3 only.
can you help me make sense of this so I don't mess something up.

/etc/modeprobe.preload I do not see this file in ubuntu
thx
dan

lspic output for controller was:

0000:00:0C.0 Serial Controller: Netmos Technology PCI 9835 Multi-I/O Controller
(rev 01)

cu output was:

command not found
looking up cu it would appear perhaps I need a switch and /or argument?

How could you have a *nix system without cu?

If you only have 1 serial connector it should be the first one: ttyS0. Try it, see what happens.

And find cu.

Your asking the wrong guy:)

that would be logical but what I can glean from googling is that the firmware of the card does not set it up that way.
i tried tty s0-3 none worked I suspect it needs ttyS4 or 5,
I may play around with it more when I am bored. In the meantime I ran up to wally world and bought a serial to usb adapter.
It could not autodetect it either, (usb--> serial) but looking into the devices advanced tab I could see that its string was /dev/tty/USB0 so I tried pointing it to that and that worked fine.

So will keep the netmos card around for when I take up skeet shooting.
kinda burns me because it says linux right on the box, but when I contacted them they said only, " we do not support linux":disgust:
