I will be leaving the country in a little over a week and I am looking for a reliable notebook computer in the $1000 range that won't die on me. I want to use the notebook primarily for keeping in touch with friends and building a web site, but I am willing to spend a little more to get something I can use for more applications in the future. I've been searching the prices on PriceWatch and I came across what seems to be what I am looking for. The only problem is that I have not heard of either of the companies that are offering the deals. Has anyone heard of Netlux or TitanNotebook? Would it be a better idea to trade in processor speed for a brand name product in order to keep the price at a preferred level while ensuring some level of quality? I would appreciate any help. Thanks.

You already know the answer! I'll reinforce it by emphasizing a few points: Laptops are unlike desktops. They use custom parts which are not easily replaceable, with exception to the hard drive maybe. The worst thing you can ever have is a dead laptop that must be packed up with all your work on it, to go to the repair center because no-names often do not have onsite service or even regional service centers. Most no-names have terrible warranties, so once your unit goes dead, you are stuck with high service costs to which you have no choice in paying (either that or you have a $1000 paperweight).

Another issue is how many of these no-names do not use the mobile pentium processor, but rather the desktop version. This creates a literally smoking experience.
