:)

Finally got around to buying a Gigabit Switch. w00t w00t. Its shiny and white.

Compusa had 2 $25 MIRs, one on a Gigabit Netgear NIC and the other on a 5 port Gigabit Switch. The NIC cost 29.99 and the Switch cost 49.99. 30 bucks after MIR. :D

btw, already had a Gigabit NIC in my machine so the new NIC went into the jukebox machine I am building.

Cheers to those with Gigabit Lan!

Well, the problem that I see with gigabit lan is that the PCI bus that the LAN card has to use has a maximum bandwith of 133mbps IIRC, which has to be shared with anything that is in it. I don't know for certain as to how well they actually work in practice, especially comparativly to a regular 10/100 setup, but if nothing else, I'd imagine it's faster, but not as fast as the numbers would have you believe.

Grats on the upgrade though.

133MB/sec on the PCI bus, not bits, so in theory there's enough bandwidth for GigE(though not in practice). You'll still be damn faster than 100e though, probably more so than your HD can even transfer.

He can get that shiny little connection notice that says "1,000" instead of "100"

i picked up one of those nics but i don't really have anything to put it in. i decided i don't actually need that kinda bandwidth for the pr0n box.

They also have a Dual WAN router for cheap.. like 150$. And it has a gigabit switch. Pretty hot deal

Cat5E will do gigabit fine. Cat6 can do the 10gig for 55 meters.

I should make a jutebox machine. I have an old computer in a closet somewhere. Its riddled with problems that need fixing, but I bet one weekend and a massive HDD should fix it.

cat5e works, but it's a tad faster over cat6.

I've been gigabit for a while now...so nice!

I really don't do tons of transfers over my LAN and I can't saturate my cable connection with my wireless-G. I just don't see the point.

I setup 1Gb networking here at work, but I'm still puttering away at 802.11g at home. Neither my desktop nor laptop need any more.

CompUSA's Netgear Gigabit NIC is now (11/11/2005) back to the regular price of $29.99.
