Netgear WNDR4500 Slows Wired Internet Connection

Hi Folks,

I'm kinda going nuts trying to figure out why my connection to the Internet slows so much when I hook up my WNDR4500. I have a cable connection right now of 12Mbps. When I do a speedtest with the cable modem ethernet connected directly to my computer, I get about 11.3Mbps (I don't expect to get quite the full 12Mbps.)

But as soon as I connect the cable modem to the router and then connect my computer to a LAN port on the router, my speedtest drops to about 3.2Mbps. I have tried recycling the modem and router by disconnecting the power for a couple of minutes, then plugging the modem back in, waiting a couple of minutes for the connection lights to come on, then plugging the power into the router and turning my computer back on.

Same thing happens every time. I've looked at pretty much everything that I think could possibly cause a problem in the router's advanced setup area, and nothing changes. I even allowed the automatic setup to run once just in case I had something screwed up and saw no change. I'm on the latest firmware.

Any ideas what could cause this?

Have you contacted Netgear? Based on what you describe, it appears that the router is the problem, but my experience has been that the provider will point a finger at the hardware manuf., and vice versa. I would personally be interested in hearing Netgear's opinion of what's going on, once they go over your settings with you. Please keep us posted.

I did correspond with Netgear on their forum. We troubleshot some potential settings which they thought could be an issue, although I had already tried most of what they advised. Ultimately, they said it had to be just a bad router. I did an RMA through Newegg since it was still within the 30 days and since I figured it would be faster than going through Netgear. I hope the replacement is OK.
