NetGEAR wireless gear -- has anyone had any trouble using them?

First off, NETGEAR sucks! Or at least so I think after dealing with two defective wireless PC cards (54Mbps). I used the same (Netgear) wireless router which has been behaving rather strange also (signal going out more than being on the stable side and w/o any good reasons). I have reset this thing more than I can count?

Customer service? oh, the good ol? times! Do you remember when an English speaking person who knew where Minnesota was on the map, used to answer your questions? Well, forget it! I spent 3 days trying to convince a Bombay resident that my card was GONE and that I needed an RMA. The funny thing is, NETGEAR?s warranty implies that free tech support can only be obtained if the hardware fails to work within 4 months from the date of purchase; anything after that costs money. What the heck happened to ONE YEAR warranty status? I mean, are we building such shi**y products that now we can't even expect a year use worth of your money? Imagine what 3 days worth of paid tech support would have meant?! Talking to someone who not only has a listening impairment but who also could give two sh*ts about your problem.

I don?t remember reading any clause implying such poor warranty declaration or else I would have never even bothered with their products!

So this has been my experience (my first ever!) with NETGEAR?s gear! I'm now stuck with two cards (worth over 100 bucks) not willing to go AGAIN through the same non-sense. I don't think I can spend another week trying to reason with people who pronounce "v" everytime they see "w" and who read off pre-made techical notes. Sorry! I'm still living in freaking AMERICA! Please, don't steal it from me!

Now, technically speaking the cards just ceased to work using a HP laptop. The symptoms are too complicated to list. To tell you the truth I have yet to come across a computer component which simply failed after only a few months of use (and I built quite a few systems in my lifetime). I don?t know? I wanted to know what your experience has been. I?d like to think that it?s only my bad jinx?

Thank you all!

I purchased a wireless G router from them which was a total piece of junk. The techs sucked and refused to give me any help so I sent it back. I didn't even get around to using the wireless because the router kept crashing.

I've installed 3 of their wireless routers (802.11b). Not as simple to install as the d-link I'm using now. Infact, the netgears allow me to connect to the Kad emule network where d-link doesn't yet.

I have had two wireless G routers die in 8 months. The pcmcia wifi cards are working great. I went to the linksys wireless G router, everything seems to be working flawlessly.

I purchased a refurbished 802.11b PCI card from Fry's, and it was missing the external antenna. Called up Netgear to see if they could just ship me a new antenna. Nope! I had to return it to Fry's. 45 minute drive later, I have my new(ish) unit.

The only saving grace is that the card wasn't going into any of my gear, but rather was a gift for a relative.

I don't recommend Netgear products anymore. Their dumb products like switches are fine, but for anything that requires tech support, I'd go somewhere else.

REMEMBER - YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR!

I always thought netgear was the high end of the retailer wireless routers. I've heard major problems with Linksys and D-link as well. Seriously what do you expect for a product that broadcast it's signal at 2.4 Ghz that is shared with other devices. The range is a scant 150 feet.

Oh well at least it seems to work well for cordless phones.

I bought three D-Link wireless-G nic's, and a NetGear Wireless G router. Major problems. All three of my computers were less than 20 feet away from the router, and I got a very staticy connection. Netgear replaced my router twice, then upgraded me to a different router, all had the same problem. I'm still stuck with $200 worth of crap that doesn't work right. I hate wireless networking, it completely sucks, sucks like a crack-whore on a Saturday night.

Edit: Also, I know what you mean about Netgear's Indian-speaking tech support. When I first called, I heard a female voice with an Indian accent, and I just about fell out of my chair. Actually I got hung up on (or disconnected) three times. The next day I sent an e-mail to customer service and they gave me a phone number to call for tech support given by white guys in their 40's. I was happy, but in the end they still couldn't make Netgear's product work right.

My GF has a Netgear 54G wireless access point, and it is always causing problems. Out of 3 wireless adapter we've used on it, only 1 of those works "ok", the rest are terrible.

The one that "works" is a MiniPCI card in her sister's laptop.
Her laptop (which is the same, bought on the same day) won't keep a connection.
My Netgear MA401 PCMCIA card won't keep a connection

The same two wireless cards that won't work with that Netgear AP work flawlessly with my cheap Belkin 11b access point at mine, and work with every other access point I've ever used.

My dad has the same laptop as my GF and her sister, and he has a US Robotics USR9106 adsl modem/router/access point, and there's not one problem. Same with the other two USR bits of kit i've installed elsewhere.

I have a D-Link DWL-650+ PCMCIA card and a D-Link DWL-2000+ Access Point for work, and the D-Link PCMCIA card won't keep a connection to the Access Point, and the AP (for the first couple of months) needed resetting every morning for it to work.

Since I've started using my Netgear MA401 at work, there's not been a problem (probably about 10 months I've been using that).

So, I've had bad experience with both D-Link and Netgear, and no problems at all with US Robotics. Take a guess at what I'm going to buy (out of my own pocket) to put in at my GF's, so both she and me can get a stable network connection. Yep, USR.

USR/3Com are the only "SOHO" stuff i'll ever buy, else it will be Cisco for corporate level.

You guys should realize that different areas probably perform very different. It's hard to judge. If someone buys a Netgear Router and Netgear Card and has problems it might just be interference. There is no perfect wireless network for home users, they are just to weak.

Installed a WG614 the other day, it died the day after. I cannot even login to it, freakin sucks. I'm 0-2 on netgear routers.

As the saying goes...YMMV. I've used or am currently using different Netgear products (was using a wired router, now using a Wireless-G router and Wireless-G PCMCIA card) and have yet to experience any problems with them.

I purchased a Netgear RT311 YEARS ago and never experienced a problem with it. I have since upgraded to a Cisco SOHO 91 router which has preformed flawlessly as well.

About a year ago i purchased the WG602 from Netgear under the pretense that it would be upgradable to WPA when the protocol was finalized. After noticing they released a WG602v2, I called their support and finally got them to admit that the WG602v1 would never be upgradable to WPA. They RMA'd my access point and I received a WG602v2.

I also had two laptops using Netgear WG511 cards that I had a lot of problems initially getting them to connect using WEP or WPA. One version of the drivers would cause a BSOD on my laptop.

It took about 3 firmware upgrades and two driver updates for me to get everything operating as I wanted it (WPA enabled)...but I can honestly say it does work properly now...

I'm using the same router with an Intel 2100 and, while MAC filtering works, WEP won't allow the adapter to get a DHCP address. I'm also a little upset that it doesn't support WPA (although what do you expect for $10).
