Netgear Wireless Adapter won't connect... help?

I got this a few days ago from woot to replace my mom's broken wireless adapter(physical damage). I got it to work fine, just that the signal strength was much lower than the former adapter.
Now I only get one bar, and it won't even connect. What's wrong?

The adapter and the receiver is only about 70ft away in the same house. All other people that comes to my house and wants to use wireless seldomly runs into any problems.

Many adapters would have difficulties with 70'.

A better description of the Wireless hardware and the environment might yield a better answer.
