I bought a Netgear WGT624NA wireless router for my parents, during the Best Buy black friday deal (had to buy as a package with the wireless adapter for rebate). I'm curious how this compares to the Linkysys WRT54G (which I have)?

Also I know there are different versions of the WRT54G, like the v5, that I have, that people complain about not being able to use modded firmware. Does the Netgear have any differences like that? The one I bought was listed as model "WGT624NA v3" on the side of the box, has the clear front panel section on the router, box shows date of 2005. They had another one on the shelf that didn't have the "v3" listed in the model #, and had a dark smoked front panel, box dated 2004.

Also Circuit City had the WGR614 for I think the same price after rebate. Just making sure I made the right choice.

I have the Netgear WGT624 v2.

Nifty router, using both wired and wireless connections. Easy to set up and work, great feature packed web browser based setup guide.

The only problem Im having is the router will randomly disconnect all wired connections and reset itself. The Router is mildly warm to the touch but in cooler weather, it seems to disconnect less frequently. This is a subjective view and needs more research but I get the impression that my problem with it is a heat problem.

That stinks. Anyone else having that problem? Don't you hear about people having that problem with any router though?

My dad bought the router. Networking is something which I know pretty much nothing about.

Ive heard that there can be heat issues with this router, This was a thread that I started about the WGT624 when I was told my dad had bought it.

Hope this helps.

Last night, I checked via. Auto-update in the Router options for new Firmware. It had never detected new firmware before and it didnt pick up any this time either.

Upon visiting the netgear site, I found that there were several firmwares newer than the one I was using.

Since flashing the firmware to a newer version, I have had no disconnects. Running time as at time of posting: 10 hours 20 minutes. Zero disconnects... so it looks like it was a firmware issue and not heat.

Hope this helps you with your decision.

The same issues you're describing, I have with Netgear 614 version. Even with the latest firmware. :(

Try the networking forum here or try older versions of firmware. Im guessing Firmware and Routers are just like drivers and the rest of PC's..... a certain combination works for one and doesnt for another... case in point, graohics card drivers.

I see the Linksys WRT54G is on sale for $30 right now, same as the Netgear router/wireless adapter I bought (and haven't opened). So I guess there's nothing proving one is better than the other?

BTW, would it be OK to use a Netgear wireless adapter with a Linksys router, or would the same brands be better?

Id assume its ok but possibly a little easier to setup with same brands. We have a netgear router and netgear wireless usb stick... my dad didnt have much problem setting it up.
