Netgear WGT624 can't connect through a D-link cable modem?

Ok, I went out and got the Netgear 108mbps wireless router/pc card combo and am trying to hook it up to my network. Inside the network, everything is fine (wireless, communication between machines, etc).

The problem comes when I try to hook it up to my D-link cable modem (DCM-200). When I power up the modem, I can see the Status light go solid, but the link light flashes every few seconds. When I try to have their network wizard detect the connection it shows that there's no connection (the flashing happens at the same moment on the modem as it does on the router).

I've tried using different cables (both crossover and straighthrough), I've tried to boot up the modem first, then the router (and vice versa) and can't get the thing to work properly. I've actually tried two routers (the result of ordering from Newegg, then seeing a better deal on Buy.com) and get the same result both times.

I should add that the connection is stable if I use a Linksys router (BEFW11S4). Any ideas?

If your computer works when directly hooked up to the cable modem, then you might have to clone the MAC address on your router. I'm assuming that's what was done on the Linksys router when you previously had it set up. Otherwise, you might have to call your cable company and tell them that you "got a new NIC card" so that they can update their database with your new MAC address. You could also hook the Linksys back up, get the MAC address from that router, and then enter the value into your Netgear router. Hope this helps.

Actually, I tried that during the night (but got pissed at it not working so I went off to play UT2k4 instead for a few hours. I first tried to clone the MAC from my pc, when that didn't work, I entered in the MAC from my old Linksys router, but still got nothing. I finally decided to call Netgear support and found out that there's a compatility issue with my modem (nice that there's nothing on the site about it, nor was mentioned in their email back to me), so I'm going to replace it with a Surfboard modem (they verified that it has no compatilibity issues).

Thanks for the help, though. Anyone want to buy a d-link cable modem?

I had a similar problem. I found I had to install a single line hub/router between the two
and then connection to Internet via DSL was a snap. HOWEVER I could not configure the
wireless card to connect to my INTRANET. I went back to my old trusty NETGEAR MR814
and all was up in 10 minutes. I had a similar problem with the DCM-200 trying to "drive"
a LINKSYS router.
