Netgear switches on a UPS Battery Backup

So I have a 16 port netgear switch, a modem, and a router attached to a 300va UPS.

Anytime the UPS switches to battery mode the switch looks like it reboots and then all 16 port lights start going into a synchronized blinking status and all connections are lost.

Are their known issues with switches and UPS batteries?
Does the switch need to be on it's own UPS?
Or is this just a typical problem with the lower quality of a Netgear consumer switch compared to an Enterprise level switch?

The whole point of having the UPS there is so that when the power does go out... we don't lose our network.

So if this turns out to just be a problem with the switch itself then I will be looking to upgrade the switch with a low-cost solution, that will allow future expandability.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Who made the UPS?

How many battery ports does it have?

Do you have a power strip plugged into the battery port on the ups?

How old is the unit?

it's an APC 350vA UPS. It has 4 battery powered plugs, and the unit is plugged directly into the wall on it's own circuit.

The unit itself is less then 1 month old.

It really sounds to me like its a bad UPS or the batteries are disconnected or some such. Try connecting a PC or something to the UPS and pulling the plug from the wall and seeing what happens. Alternately, it may be that you are drawing too much power on the UPS (unlikely, but if it is a gigabit 16 port switch, they tend to draw more). Perhaps try having just the switch on the UPS and pulling the UPS power plug and see if it reboots (if so, the draw for the router and modem are too much).

I highly doubt that's the problem because I hooked them up to a 900vA UPS and the same problems occurred. Unless I am misunderstanding what a vA really is... I don't see that being the problem.
