I am running Win98SE on two machines and networked them using the RT314 router. Everything works for a awhile, then out of nowhere the router drops the connection. The cable modem never did this when it was hooked directly into the Comp. Both the Internet link light on the modem and the link light on the router still blink normally this whole time. No problem with the LAN during any of this.

Oh, sometimes only one comp. will lose access and other times both. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Are you doing anything at the time it drops? Like updating a list of internet games that ping several IPs in a short amount of time.

Have you run the Wizard configuration on its Web based utility? If your cable modem is a Toshiba and your provider is Roadrunner, there is an option there for it. You can also type in your account number and password so it can reconnect. Also, try updating the firmware if you haven't done that yet.

I have a similar and potentially related issue. My connection gets really choppy whenever I reboot a computer. Data comes into the computer in fits and starts. This is solved by removing and reapplying power to the RT314. It's a workaround but highly annoying. I have 2 Win98SE computers peer2peer. I upgraded the router software to latest release. I can't tell if it's my ISP (Telocity), my computer (ABIT,TBird), or Windows. Any ideas? TIA.

chaevans, what kind of NIC are you using? Have you run the wizard web utility? Make sure encapsulation is ethernet and you can toggle between RR-Toshiba, RR- manager and standard. I set mine to RR-Toshiba and the spluttering went away but yours may be a different setting.

RanDum72, Thanks for some ideas. NIC is a Netgear FA312. I did use the wizard web utility. Encapsulation is ethernet and I have the service type set up as 'standard'. I assumed since the other 2 settings require a user name and password that standard was correct for me (Telocity, for me at least, does not require a signin). But to be honest I have no idea what RRToshiba and RRmanager mean or what I would put in for a user name and password even if I tried those two. Does your ISP require identification?

I have roadrunner, I just type in the user and password just in case. I have an almost similar setup. I have the RT311 router with a seperate Netgear FS105 switch. My NIC is the FA 311 which is the same as yours but without the WOL. Everything works perfect. I would want to toggle between the two RR settings just to see what happens. What kind of cable modem do you have?

RanDum72, I tried the RR settings and things seem to work now except I'm having some general computer problem (I actually suspect it might be the NIC). Not sure who makes the dsl modem. Generic version supplied by Telocity. Hopefully if I can figure out what is wrong with my computer I'll be good (I smell a new thread being started :^)). Thanks.

Netgear's latest drivers are feb. of 2001, so you should grab it if you haven't yet. I would also reset the PCI/Pnp configuration under the BIOS(usually under the option PCI/PnP, where you enable reset configuration data or something like that). If you set the motherboard's bus speed higher than normal(overclock), the PCI speed may be more than 33mhz. I notice my NIC doesn't like anything higher than 35mhz. Heck, feel free, start a new thread:)
