Netgear Rt314 vs SMC barricade

The Barricade has a print server built in. That's about it. They are both pretty solid. Personally, I have the barricade, it's pretty nice. =)

Not sure about the Barricade, but the 314 is a hub/router. Only need it, to network multiple PC's. No need to buy an additional hub.

barricade is a switch/router.. faster than a hub... but I think the 314 has more features... I thought the 314 was a switch too ? both cheap now...

Hi Forcesho,

You prolly know a lot more than I about networking stuff, but the 314 is a Gateway/Router. Don't know much about the "gateway part" (heck, I only just recently put together my FIRST FILTER!...woo-hoo!)

The 314 has a really lame IE interface you can use to set it up. They advertise "works right out of the box...just plug it in!" Yeah, right. 😛

It didn't work for me and I had to learn about TELNET (which is vastly superior anyway, just doesn't have a warm-fuzzy user interface) to get it up and running. But, that said, it's worked like a charm since I got it setup. I had three blackouts (before I got my UPS) and it retained all it's settings. I score a "0" on DSL reports big, long security test, so it's doing it's thing. No response from any ports or pings. Cool. It's worked flawlessly since I got it setup.

Netgear's customer support isn't all that great. I won't say it sucks, because it doesn't, but you will wait on hold for an hour, easy.

The kind folks right here on this very forum helped me out. Now that I know a little about the router and how "routing" works and some about filters, I can "see" why the setup is the way it is. I was most definitley lost and SOL when I first got it though.

I'd still recommend it, especially since I know how to set the stupid thing up now.

I have the Netgear RT311 (cousin to the 314) which is nice. But if you want features for web broser.. you got upgrade to firmware 3.25 .. I did and now I can port forward from the browser.

However the Barricade comes with all that and more. Its a nicer interface with lots of options (since no telnet everything is in the browser), allows multiple VPN's... and it reboots faster..

get the barricade..

Just to clarify, the netgear 314 is a router/switch as well. And seeing as how they both have 4 ports, you will not see a speed difference anyways over a router/hub

And the newest version of the bios for the rt314 has a new and imporved web interface with much more functionality.

the barricade worked for me without s/w

it has a parallel print server and a serial 56k ext modem port for bachup if your broadband goes down

it's a router/switch cable/dsl ethernet modem

i like the barricade... i own 3 of it, it's very simple but i'm sure they're all good products 🙂

Bump for RT314, good stuff. Have my security filters installed and I'm secure from nearly every security scan I can find on the 'net. I wouldn't mind a built in print server (ala SMC) -- but I can live without that feature.

like a lot of things it comes down to looks

see which one you like better, bigger, etc

for me i wanted something small that i can just hide behind other equip

The Com port on the Barricade would sure make jau's modem connection adventure a little easier. If these routers are the same price, the Barricade is a no brainer. Slap an external modem on that Com port for a slick backup when your high speed access is down. And the print server feature is the slam dunk! :Q
