Anyone know what this buisness about 4 ports and 1 port mean? Since both can network something like 200+ computers together, whats the difference? Are the ports the actual ethernet RJ45 slot where the Cat5 line goes in? Any advice/clarificaton?

thanx

The RT311 has one output RJ45 port to plug into your hub/switch you already have. The RT314 has 4 output RJ45 ports as it has a bult in 4 port switch. So if already have a switch get the RT311, if not get the RT314 and you can hook up 4 computers to it. If you already have a hub the RT314 would be the way to go also as the built in switch would be better then the hub. So, the routers are the same thing, one just has a built in 4 port switch.

Practically Networked Review RT314...

While the routers do differ in the number of ports (RT311 = 1 RJ45 port and RT314 = 4 10/100 Switched ports), the RT314 has a new system board and faster processor for better throughput and results according to the review at Practically Networked (above)..

Good Luck...

P.S. I've had the RT314 for 3 days and, other than the odd setup (Telnet and ftp updates), it's been ROCK solid and VERY fast so far..

Good Luck!

Engineer I agree with it 100% I have the RT314 Router also. Great piece of H/W but I wanted to update the Firmware also to the newest version as I was setting it up. When I FTPed the newest RAS file it showed the old file RAS file like it didnt take or upload to the router. But if I telnet into the router you could see the file size differance so i knew it upgraded to the newest Firware! Plus it showed the new version displayed.

With a RT311 router you will need a hub if your connecting 2 or more computers.

With a TR314 router you can hook up to 4 computers for Lan and Internet. If you want more then 4 computers on a Lan or internet you can still by a Hub and get even more computers on Lan or Internet.

Both these routers have RJ45 jacks.
