Netgear RT314 and networking

I just set up internet sharing between my computer and my sister's. I'm using an RT314 and have a few questions.

How do I setup the firewall using NAT? I'm not familiar with firewalls and for all I know it might be activated by default. I just know it's good to have one.

How do I use Napster with the router? It seems to be blocking me from connecting.

Is it possible to use the router to network our two computers and not just share a connection?

I heard the latest firmware addressed the napster issue. The router doesn't have a firewall but u can set some access-list to do a primary security job. And yes a router can be used to network 2 computer, you don't need a router to do that since a switch is more fitted to the job. Unless you plan on having each pc on a different subnet, never heard of someone doing that but maybe for the fun...

Router does act like a firewall by useing nat is keeps individual ip addresses connected to router (Meaning your computers) hidden from the outside world...

Goto web news on netgear rt314 there is a review on router that might help

Thanks
Jason

tjII11a do u know of a remedy for the barricade SMC routers firewall to be disabled for a specific Mirc program. I read the manual but amd not getting it I have a thread asking for help on this or a site that has help on it.

The netgear RT314 is a router/firewall with a built-in 4port switch. Get the latest firmware, it solves the napster issue. It also enables port-forwarding in the Web-based utility.

Tungfree, if the SMC barricade has port forwarding or port ranging, open the ports that will enable IDENT to communicate. Check "practicallynetworked.com", they have everything on routers and stuff.

port forwarding opens one of many "doors" that can be opened and closed in a networked PC within a firewall so that certain individuals( in this case programs) can go in and out. For example mIRC uses port 6699(?). Some routers close this as a security measure. So what you do is you go into the setup program (either Web-based, where you just type in the IP address of the router which is typically 198.162.0.1 or Telnet. Netgear has the more advanced options under Telnet, see web site for more info) type in the IP address assigned to the PC by the router and specify which port you want to open. This way programs outside the firewall has been given the key to that specific door. Some routers also have a DMZ (demilitarized zone) where they can specify a PC in the network that is open on all ports.

TakedownCA- NAT in and of itself gives you a degree of protection and acts as a firewall. The RT314 allows you to configure filters that filter out all but the traffic you want to get to the PC's connected to it.
The RT314 has 6 common ports opened by default to allow basic functions such as surfing the net, sending and receiving e-mail, telnet, and ftp. To make Napster work you will need to port forward port 6699 to the PC you are using to download. Depending on the firmware you have you may be able to do this via your browser by picking SUA/NAT and typing in 6699 and the IP of the PC you are using. If your firmware doesn't allow you to do this in the browser go to "RUN" and type <telnet 192.168.0.1>. This will open a telnet session to the router. Pick option 15 and type in what I described above then tab to the bottom of the page and hit enter. Type in option 99 to end the telnet session. You should then be able to download from Napster. Napster lets you search for songs on port 80 but sharing happens over port 6699.

Go here and download the RT314 manual that should have come with the router:
RT314 Manual
Go here and download the Zyxel manual for the P314 which is the same unit (the Netgear RT314 is made by Zyxel):

Good luck!😀
