Well I have been running NAT32 for about a year and a half. I hooked it up to a Linksys 5 port 10Base hub for my small home network of 3 computers.
But now with all the DSL/cable routers out I wanted to compare wha I have vs what is out there.
SO I went down to best buy and got the Netgear rt 311 router
and stoped by office depot and got the Linksys with the 4 port 10/100 switch.
My first impression of the Netgear router was good. It is all metal construction, wich made it feel like a real peace of hardware. It was easy to set up and worked fine for me.
But it did not have a build in router, so I hooked up my 5 port hub.
It all worked well together, but I know the hub slowed down the speed.
Over all, Good durable construction, easy to set up, but did not have a built in 4 port link the Linksys. But netgear does have a version that has a 4 or 5 port built in.
It also came with a cross over cable and a stright thru cable wich was nice not to have to buy.
Next was the Linksys. I bought one of their "home network kits" a few years ago, and was happy with it, even thou one of the nic was DOA.
The case on the Linksys is made outta plastic. It looked to be put together well.It had a funky looking power adapter with it, unlike the Netgear that had a power cord like a PC.
So I hook everything up. All 3 computers got on the net but one. I was unable to get the 1 computer to get on the net or network. But the network transfer speeds were way faster than with my little 10 base hub.
Then I put both the routers back in their boxes. Reconfigured my NAT32 and pulled out a SMC EZ switch 10/100 I had bought. I plugged in my DSL in the uplink port and hooked the other computers into it. I can now play CS on both my computers MUCH faster than with my little 5 port running at 10Mbps
So i decided that I will keep my new SMC switch and keep NAT32 running as well.
I figure 80 for the SMC switch and the 40 I spent on my NAT32 I am right around what the others cost, well actuall about 40 dollars ahead.
The Linksys was 161 it was bought at office max, just saw tthe tag.
The Netgear was 130 at best buy.
The SMC switch was 80 at PC club.
Just thought I would share.
