Hello all,

I have gotten mixed answers on this so I thought I would bring the question here....

Comcast here in VA uses the Computer name and a Workgroup for authentication....

The computer name is usually something like cj*****
and the workgroup is @home

On my Router Setup there is a clearly marked field for the computer name which I have entered, however the only other field is one for the domain......

Now I have been told that in the Domain field you should enter:

@home, like in the workgroup filed in the Network properties
home.net for the new comcast setup
home.com
and also the entire address for your locals web hosting....

I currently have it set up with @home in the domain field however I am unsure if this is correct.

any info on this and any other setup tips would be greatly appreciated thanks.

I have also wondered how the computer name/domain name is used by these cable companies. They give you one when you sign up and seem to imply that you need it to use your service. However, I don't see how they even check for any of that information since none of your packets will contain that information in the layer 3 header.

Also, the "@" symbol is an illegal character to insert in a fully qualified domain name so if you have that in the domain name part of your router then it's not really valid anyways.

To throw even more confusion on top of all that, some genious at Microsoft has also decided to name and refer to their Windows networking organizational structure as "domains". Windows domains have nothing to do with DNS type "domains names". Often times it's hard to tell which type of domain is being referred to.

I am now using comcast.net, switched over yesterday w/o problem. I live in MD north of Balto. I left the system name and domain the same as I was using with @home. No problem, even though one of there customer service reps said I could change it to comcast.net for the domain name. I don't think it matters.
