Netgear Router Woes?

Alright, so just after Christmas I upgraded to the Netgear N300 Wireless N Router (WNR2000) from my Linksys WRT54GS v4 because we had a few new devices coming on to our network and I figured it would be good to get a new router now. My PS3 runs on G, so does my desktop, and the family PC (I believe the Wii does too). Both laptops running on the network use Wireless N.
So, setting it up and all, for some reason to stuff felt a bit slower. Which is to be expected, but I went in and changed all the settings around, upgraded firmware, etc. After continuing to use it, I'm still peaking at the same speeds I was with the G in some downloads and such, but generally PS3 gaming and sometimes browsing feels slower. I realize that the cable connection could be some of this cause (for some reason connection dropping at times like night when everyone is on), but I just did a Speedtest on both wired and wireless with the router on my desktop, and I'm getting at the most 1.6 down, where I'm supposed to have 8 at the least. Especially the past few days, everything has just been slow it seems.

So, did I make a mistake in upgrading, is this just a shitty router, or what?

Rarely if, if ever, are current internet speeds going to be restricted by the bandwidth available on a G router. You should notice a speed difference in file transfers between N clients.

It's possible that you have a interference issue. How many 2.4Ghz networks are in range? Have you tried changing the channel you are broadcasting on? Have you tried bypassing the router to make sure it isn't your internet connection at the moment?

Now that I think about it, it shouldn't slow down on the wired connection. I would bypass the router for a second and make sure it wasn't my ISP.
