I am a newby trying to set up a wireless network in my home. I want to connect a desktop and a laptop. Both have built in nics. I live in the boonies and cannot get cable/dsl. I have dialup. Can I setup a wireless network using a Netgear MR814 to connect to the desktop and a wireless pc card adapter in my laptop and share dialup connection?

If not, what would be the simplest and cheapest solution? An ad hoc network?

thanks,

Randy

Ok, what about the Netgear MR814 and using my internal modem? Can I set it up as an access point to share with my lappy?

Try the following.

Install a Network card in the computer that has the Modem.

Connect the Wireless Router with to the Network Card, using regular Router port (leave the WAN port open).

Configuration instructions here: Using a Wireless Cable/DSL Router as a Switch with an Access Point

Before attempting any Internet connection configure sharing etc. and make sure that you can connect and use the wireless as a LAN.

Once it works OK, configure Windows ICS for DialUp.

Link to: Windows XP Internet Connection Sharing.

If ICS does not work try this instead: AnalogX Proxy.

Jackmds,

Would using this router as an access point be better than setting up an ad hoc network with a pc card in the lappy and a usb wireless adapter in the desktop. I want to be able to get at least 50ft away from my desktop with the laptop.

Thanks for the help,

Randy

Yeah if it works this way it is better to use the Wireless Router as an Access Point.

One (among few) reason. If distance is a problem you can play with the location of the Wireless, or even connected it with long CAT5 and put it somewhere in between.

Wireless Card on a computer configured Ad-Hoc is very limited setting.
