I bought a Netgear FS105 to split my cable internet with my PC and for use with Xbox live. But for some reason, it's unable to connect to xbox live. Says invalid IP address. Yet my internet on my PC works fine. Did I need to get a router or is a network switch the right one?

You needed to get a router, not a switch.

A consumer-grade router is basically a device that has a built-in switch, but it also contains software which does a network address translation, which simulates to the outside world that all of your internal computers, etc, are just one device. ISPs generally require you to pay extra for multiple IP addresses. Network address translation, among many other things, gets around that limitation.

So, yes, you'll need to get a router instead of the switch.
