Netflix Windows 8 App

Hi all,

I've heard that Windows 8 has an app that allows streaming in 1080p. I don't know of any other way to stream from netflix (1080p) on a PC. Presently I have am using Windows 7. I'm stuck at 720p which is annoying.
On a separate matter, are there any known issues with older games? Running, etc?

Thanks.

The Netflix plugin for Media Center seems to give a 1080p stream, but I have no way of telling.

The Netflix app in Windows 8 is really good. Best interface for NF yet. Of course that's not saying much considering how terrible all the other UIs (web, mobile, various devices) are.

Thats the first i've heard of PC netflix being restricted to 720p at all. I just go to netflix.com and stream right from firefox on Win7 or Win8, it always streams 1080p for me as long as my network isn't strained for bandwidth because of other downloads.

Hi Mushkins,
When you stream does netflix list the resolution?
Everthing I've read online suggests it's only possible to stream 1080p with Windows 8.
Thanks.

This blog post seems to indicate 1080p is only available with their html5 player (specifically mentions 1080p as a feature of HTML5 player).

I rarely watch on my PC so I never pay any attention to this, but I was under the impression Win7 was limited to 720p streams.

So what can you do to improve your Netflix video quality if your ISP doesn’t participate in Open Connect? Not a lot. If you’re a PC user, you can “force HD.” It may take 10 minutes to buffer, but at least what you watch will look good (albeit at 720p – only Windows 8 users with a compatible Netflix app can enjoy Super HD on a PC). Or, you could always lobby your ISP to get on board with Netflix (they may not have a choice soon). But outside of that, you’re pretty much at the mercy of Netflix’s bandwidth and the whims of the Interwebs.
Emphasis mine.

Web streaming has a smaller selection of "lower-quality" HD than any of the dedicated apps.

You can see it right on a show or movies page from a web browser. It tells you where it does stream, and in what quality.

Thanks for the responses.
I suppose Netflix might eventually allow 1080p streaming in Windows 7. I'm not sure is it a technical limitation or perhaps it is up to Microsoft to provide an app?

For 1080p on a PC you need either the Windows 8 app or IE11 with 8.1 (will not work with IE11 on Windows 7).
