SAN FRANCISCO - Girding for a potential threat from Apple, online DVD rental service Netflix is lifting its limits on how long most subscribers can watch movies and television shows over high-speed Internet connections.

Apparently all subscribers except those that get 2-per-month ($4.99) will have no hourly limits anymore and can stream as much as they want. Starts tomorrow (1/14).

they seem to have network capacity problems. there are a few hour-blocks during the day when i stream very poor quality videos (with MY bandwidth capability constant). however, most of the time, the quality is much higher than standard 1.5gb divx. looks pretty nice. downside is that selection is limited

Hmmm, what would I use to get my video card which has 2 DVI out ports, to my TV which has a DVI in. Anything special needed, or do I need to give more info?

The quality is very good...certainly not dvd quality but very acceptable imo.

Fwiw, Friday I watched 'World's Fastest Indian' (great movie), 2:07 long, .wmv file size is almost 1.89gb, and the bitrate (according to Properties) is 6154kbps.

They just added Showtime's Dexter to the streaming list.

They will probably do what all of the companies that offer these buffet style deals (all you can ****) have done. Get a billion people signed up, then start limiting and raising prices to get "premium" services.

Do you need custom software to view the downloaded movies, or will they run on Windows Media player directly? I'm assuming VLC is out of the question because of DRM. Is their downloader adware/spyware free?

I would expect this to get much worse once they go unlimited.

they have their own IE-embedded player (does not work with firefox).. only plays in that player and nowhere else

Not just software. A whole set-top box. Link

Capitalizing on the momentum of their nearly year-old Watch Now online streaming service and recent set-top box partnership with LG

Call me when any company has the full normal selection of titles online at less than the cost of a normal rental or matinee movie ticket ($5). Until then, it is movies by mail and store.

Even funnier is how great Alec Baldwin is on it and how much he hates being on the show.:D

Interesting. The better be working out some licensing agreements with the studios over more movies tho...doesn't matter how convenient you make it to stream movies, if they are mostly B movies like the larger part of their 6k online selection...

boggles my mind.

I almost feel guilty taking advantage of it.

I love netflix, but I'm glad I'm not an investor ;)
