Dear Kristofer,

Effective December 15, 2008, we will no longer carry HD DVDs. At that time, we will automatically replace any HD DVD titles in your Queue with standard DVDs when available. You don't have to do anything.

Last February, we announced that since most of the major movie studios had decided to release their high-def movies exclusively in Blu-ray, we were going exclusively Blu-ray as well and would be phasing out our HD DVDs.

We're sorry for any inconvenience. If you have any questions or need further assistance, please call us at 1-888-638-3549.

- The Netflix Team

Good thing I don't rent them anymore, but wonder what they're going to do with all of their old HD DVDs. Sell them?

I think this is just an "official" notice more than anything else. I know you haven't able to add them your queue for quite some time.

me. I still have a HD-DVD player.

Me too. I'm cool with them not releasing new movies on HD-DVD (I'm not a big movie guy and the ones I really want to see I will go and see in a theater), but it would have been nice to continue to be able to rent them. Prices haven't really come down that much. I wonder what Netflix will do with all their HD-DVDs? Probably destroy them... :(

Are you kidding? I just picked up a crapload of them in Fry's bargain bins for $8-10 each. The same movies on bluray were at least double that. I'm sure my A2 (and A3 backup) will easily last until we're all downloading.

Yeh, I got the email just a bit ago. I guess it's time to buy a PS3 or Blue-Ray player :(

Yeah, I know. But I'm still wondering, what will they do with the HD DVDs?

Damn I better queue some more up with the quickness! The only reason I went HD-DVD gonzo was the XBOX 360 HD-DVD drive at best buy for $50 deal (6 movies too, so $9 a movie plus a free drive).

Yeah... They don't sell their old DVD's anymore, so they probably will destroy them :(

Not true. You can still add HD DVDs to your queue. I rented one a few weeks ago.

Actually, if you read all of the news articles, rather than the headlines, they're wholesaling them to someone else who will be selling them. Why would they destroy them??

Hmm... so what did they change? I thought I got an email that they were altering my queue to have dvd instead of HD-DVD and disallowing HD-DVD. Did they only do the downgrade?

It makes sense for them to pull the plug all at once, because they won't be able to replace discs as they break or get scratched. Turn-around times would rapidly get too high as the number of discs in rotation dwindled. Better that they stop offering the service than provide the service poorly.

They announced they were discontinuing renting HD DVDs in Feb, but they still offered them to people who were already signed up to receive them. They are finally getting rid of them in Dec.
