I decided to sign up for Netflix because I got a Bluray player/PS3.

So for I've tried 4 movies, all Bluray discs. Netflix's record is very poor so far. I've gotten 2 movies that either wouldn't play at all or would play part way and quit. Upon close examination, both discs had a crack in the outer part of the disc. The one which wouldn't play at all had about a half inch crack, and the one that didn't finish was a smaller rack.

Netflix ships the discs in a simple paper sleeve which either isn't good enough or the discs are prone to cracking. Either way, when you have to wait days for another movie, this isn't too good.

Anyone else have this issue, or am I just "lucky".

I have yet to have any issues with Netflix and their turnaround time is pretty quick for me.

I have gotten 2-3 day turn around

Tonight I was getting to the exciting latter part of the movie and no go. Now I don't feel like waiting 3 days to see the end. Grr.

Damn, then I hope my luck improves. I was worred at first that my shiny new PS3 had a flakey bluray player, but then I looked closely at both of the problem movie dics and they both had a single crack at the outer edge which ran from the outer edge toward the center.

2/4 disc's with cracks is sure getting off to a start badly. Perhaps Netflix recievers should give a quick look before putting dics back into the rental stock.

My sister has been using them for well over a year now and loves it. She has only rented standard DVD's thought. I wonder if the material that the Bluray discs are made from is prone to cracking. The cracks on 2/4 discs were very similar in nature.

I'm with Shawn. I've rented several BD movies and haven't had any issues. Bluray discs should be more durable than DVD's.

Should be but not in every way. Apparently they are very scratch resistant but I called the cust service dept and the rep acknowledged that cracks in the Bluray discs are fairly common. There must be something about the material they are made from which differs from standard DVDs.

I have only had about 4 cracked DVD"s come in from netflix in the last 5 years or so. They are usually pretty good but maybe there is something about the BR disks that make them more crack prone.

I've been getting blu-ray discs from them for over a year and a half with none cracked so far. I have gotten a couple of regular DVDs that were cracked over the last 8 years.

Anyone else have this issue, or am I just "lucky".
Your mailman might be a little too violent in handling the mail. Cracks happen, but not 50% of the time more like 0.5% or less.

 OP, do you live next door to me? I just joined Netflix also, and out of 2 Blu-Ray discs, 1 was cracked about a half-inch on the outside. Maybe I just got the one that you sent back!

I was really looking forward to watching "Cars" on BD this weekend, too. :| Maybe it's 'cuz it's a "children's" title.

On top of that, it shipped from a non-local distribution center, so I had to wait 2 extra days for it. And this is my free trial period too. :|

whoa...

glad to know I'm not crazy then.

BTW, I found out I was not in a free trial but a "risk free' period. I cancel before the end of 30 days and get a refund. I think I will, then maybe restart with the 2 movie option.

Guess what? Yes, another BR disc with a crack in it. I got Enchanted to watch with my daughter and a chapter in the middle of the movie wouldn't play. Fortunately we could go to scene selection and move past the bad part of the disc. The wierd part is the short crack was at the outer edge - so why would the part that wouldn't play be in the middle?

My daughter looked at the disc and confirmed she saw the crack too under a bright lamp light.

My very first netflix disk was broken:brokenheart:

The rest have been OK. My PS3 ate one when its PSU died, waiting for the RMA (of the PS3).

The reason you get netflix is for the instantview video streaming service:thumbsup:

I read that the Blu-Ray disks have a harder protective coating than dvds.

Maybe this also means that they are more brittle than regular dvds?

I've probably had about 5 broken discs (I suspect several were due to my mailbox being extremely small and the postal carrier jamming them in there when there's other mail) and probably 15 unplayable or scratched up discs that skip.

YOyoYOHowsdanetflixqueue?!

I've gotten 2 discs that were broken over the past 3 years. Essentially every disk is scratched, some far worse than others but less than 10 have been unplayable in my DVD player. Most recently I had one that looked like it had been handled by Mr. Greasy Fingers and I couldn't clean the fingerprints off of it. Needless to say it was unplayable. All of mine have been regular DVD and not Blue Ray for what it's worth.

When I first joined, on advice from members here, because BB had long waits on all the Blu-Ray movis I wanted to rent, I was sent 3 cracked out of 9 movies *3 at a time*. I reported it each time, requested the same movie as a replacement, which once came from a different distro, and haven't had one since. That is a good 40 BDs or more in a row. I always inspect movies and games before insertion, since it isn't unusual to find crud stuck to them, by some slob that mishandled it.

I haven't had any issues but I only get regular DVD's. Turn around is quick. They get my returns the next and ship out that day and I receive the next. Basically two days. Very happy with them.

This happen to me all the time with dvds.

That is why there is only one way to go where there is almost a 100% guarantee you will have no dvd or blu ray cracks or scratches. You don't have to worry about them not having enough in stock either.

Never had a scratched or dirty Blu-Ray disc. Most of the DVD are dirty and I just wipe them down before I play them. Makes a huge difference.
