I can see why their gaining popularity, they seem like they would be alot easier to take around yet remain nearly as functional as a full laptop. Been searching around but i guess i just dont know what would suit me best.

I dont know how powerful the Atom is and have never even used a laptop before, so figured some here have experiences and tell me what i should look for. If i get one, i plan to install a fast Linux Distro for speed and smaller footprint, so it doesnt matter if it comes with XP or whatever, i just want to make sure i get the hardware that suits me.

My intended uses and wants:
Internet browsing..naturally, via WLAN, so a built in wlan card is necessary
Music, music editing
Watching Videos smoothly
Playing console emulators like nintendo..etc, perhaps even some adventure genre, pc games under wine would be a nice extra but no biggie if i cant.

I also really dont care for moving the cursor with those smartpads, I think i'd rather have a touchscreen, but those seem hard to find. Any opinions and advice is appreciated
thanks in advance.

MOD EDIT: Moving to SFF, Notebooks, Pre-Built/Barebones PCs - Zap

A tablet netbook isn't availible. You have to look at the Atom as a minture P4. SO prossesing power isn't all that great. The video on those is very limited as well so don't expect to be able to watch any HD video. But the biggest problem is there small size making the use of the keyboard difficult. Esspecially if you have large hands.

Overall you may be better off with a good laptop.

Get eeePC or MSI Wind, they have a bunch of mod community following it. Grab a resistive touch screen off eBay and self mod.

Yet... I think some companies were showing them off at CES. Don't know when you'd be able to buy them, but the idea isn't unique.

You can pick up a 9" EeePC and a DIY touch screen from dealextreme.com. Its $50 or so, but it'll be worth it if you can get it to work.

Also, AVI's and such run butter smooth on my Eee PC. Abandonware and emulation run quite well. I have a logitech precision gamepad which works for everything.

I love my Aspire One 1Gb/120Gb with Rons TinyXP build on it. There is also a touchscreen mod for this unit over on the aspireoneuser forum.

interesting, so the OS would function ok right? i mean i could then touch icons and they would react?

*edit: i could not locate a touchscreen on that site, do you have a link or more info?
