My Asus Eee PC 1000HD has a matte display (LCD with TFT Active Matrix and LED backlight) and it looks great!

The display is super bright (no washout) and has an unbelievably wide & tall viewing angle. I run it @ 60% brightness. ;)

Don't know what kind of options you are asking about - select models or suggested upgrades, but...

Options:
  • 1) I replaced the OEM 1GB RAM stick with 2GB (the max) of Corsair "Mac Memory".
    2) I'm dual-booting XP (included) with a full desktop install of Linux Mint 7 "Gloria".
    3) I'm running a 4GB Kingston SDHC in the media slot, in case I need to 'sneakernet'.
    4) I'm *thinking* about swapping out the black keyboard for a white one ($15 @ Asus Store).
Overall, I couldn't be happier with the 1000HD ($249 @ Target) so I quit looking at other models!

EDIT

* Added a link, in case ppl don't know what 'sneakernet' means... :D

I used a Dell D630 ATG that glossy screen that is just as good as matte screens, maybe even better, in outdoor use. It doesn't reflect sunlight and was perfectly usable outdoors and in the office. Whatever they did to the screen was great. It's nothing like those glossy screens you see at the big box stores.

The new Lenovo S12 has a semi-matte - sort of in between. It's worth a look.
