netbooks and overclocking

I'm picking up a netbook to play with in the $300.00 range and want a 6 cell battery, windows 7 starter, and something that has a moddable/hackable bios to overclock.

What are my options? I see the asus 1201n? and hp mini but the hp is in the $400.00 range and I cant find the asus locally. Do the acer netbooks have a hackable bios? Searches from work turn up a bunch of blocked sites...

I can get a newer 450 atom netbook for around $299.00, but am torn on which to get...

The ones that overclock seem to be the 270 series.

I got my HP Mini 311 for $350 at Office Depot locally and it almost meets your criteria (had XP not crippled 7).

Only thing about XP is that its going to be obsolete soon and I don't want to have to buy a new OS. I don't see the 311 on Office Depot's website so maybe its instore only. It has the 11 inch screen with the higher resolution which is nice. I could probably swing that if I could get it for $350ish and oc it in the bios.

MS will be supporting XP until 2014.

I think XP would be fine for a netbook. I mean you cant run 64bit Win7 or upgrade to 4gb of ram anyways. There isnt much to upgrade in terms of hardware on it that could require windows 7 drivers. About the only issue is say you bought a printer or scanner in 2013 or something and the manufacturer decided not to provide any windows xp drivers. Web browsers, Adobe and all of them are going to support windows xp for quite a long time.

Meh, XP was obsolete back around 2007. Its archaic now, just hanging around because of corporate dependence and the upgrade expense.

Bought a 311 off ebay last night.. should be here in a few days. I'll stick with XP and ubuntu netbook edition.

You might want to try OSX. The 311 makes the best hackintosh I have ever owned. Everything except ethernet after sleep works!
