NetBIOS over PPPoE in Win2K?

Friends,

I'm using an xDSL connection connected to a modem then to a router-switch. The switch has 4 ports which are connected to different workstations. I've configured the router for PPPoE and Internet access for all PC's(using Win2k) are fine. However, I can't seem to "see" the other PCs on Network neighborhood but I can ping their private IP addresses. I've disabled Client for Microsoft Networks and File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks for security issues. On the other hand, I've installed NetBIOS on all the workstations and rebooted. Problem is, I still can't get the PC's to "see" one another in Network Neighborhood. Any suggestions?

Your post doesn't make much sense to me. If you disable File and Print sharing, then the box is no longer a "server" and should not appear in network neighborhood as it is no longer advertising itself. If you disable Client for Microsoft Networks then you wouldn't be able to connect to a machine if it was in network neighborhood.

You also say you installed NetBIOS, (you mean NetBEUI). Is File and Print Sharing and Client for Microsoft Networks bound to NetBEUI? F&P Sharing and Client for MS Networks should be enabled, just your binding of it to TCP/IP should be disabled - NetBEUI binding should be eneabled.

To clarify: Computers do not see one the other unless Sharing is enable.

Enable the Client for Microsoft Networks and File and Printer Sharing, and then click on the properties of TCP/IP, and in the binding tab Uncheck the sharing.

Click on NetBEUI properties, and bind it to the sharing. Make NetBEUI default protocol on all computers.

Doing so causes local traffic to use NetBEUI, which is not routable to the Internet, while Internet traffic uses TCP/IP.

Actually, you are giving Win9x instructions and he has 2K. In 2K it is
Control Panel/Network Connections/ Advanced (Menu)/Advacned Settings
then select the NIC, Make sure that Client for MS Netorks and F&P Sharing are checked, and under each of those TCP/IP is unchecked and NetBEUI is checked.

My mistake, mobly99 is right, did not pay attention to the OS.

The principle is the same, location is different.
