NETBEUI does it slow me down? I need help!

Alrighty guys Im a hardware tech new to networking but Im networking these 2 computers to my cable modem, problem is one has 1st edition of win 98 and the other has 2nd edition of win98, I believe that is my problem. What happened is in the network the PC's were able to see only themselves yet share the cable modem, both able to use that modem to access the internet, however were not able to see each other for any file sharing. When I used NETBEUI however, the computers could see each other and file share while also using the cable modem together. My question is my cable modem speed being reduced by using NETBEUI there are times when I notice my cable going very slow, and times very very fast (I know a shared node but this is still very erratic the cable service in my area is sparesly used by others)please help reply ASAP Thank you!

netbeui is self configuring,it is good for very small networks. However
u should use tcp/ip.The reason the 2 computers could not see each other was
because u have to go into tcp/ip config and enable file and print shareing
then share out the drives u select.U can then remove netbeui as it is no
longer needed and produces broadcast traffic anyway.

Netbeui is netbeui, it's not tcp compatible so it doesn't even communicate with a cable modem. However having multiple protocols isn't great either.. you can safely remove all netbeui anyway..
