everyone wants to get on the internet and that requires TCP/IP. Why install two protocols when TCP/IP can handle everything and is routable? With TCP/IP you can share files across the internet. With netbui it's only on your local network. TCP/IP won the protocol wars not because of speed, but because it's openess, versatility and flexibility. You can use it for almost any task.

I understand the difference between NetBEUI and TCP/IP...

My point was that SMB browsing sucks hard, if NetBEUI makes it suck less and makes local filesharing easier, why wouldn't MS encourage it's use?

Mainly because from a scalability perspective the protocol just doesn't work. It is a LAN protocol that just isn't suited to modern internetworks.

But by 'modern networks' you must not mean SOHO networks since you keep recommending it for those.

That's correct.

A SOHO imlementation is not an internetwork, much less a modern one.

I know it's not routable so it won't work for corporate usage, but as you keep recommending it for home users you can't deny that it wouldn't be good to put it in an easier place for installation and maybe have it be installed by the home networking wizard.

Microsoft isn't interested in the SOHO market anymore except selling Windows XP licenses on new PC's. Microsoft is in a fight for the enterprise software market.
