We do this to new people all the time.

My favorite is

"To format C:\ click OK. =WARNING= All data on the disk will be destroyed"

Of course, there's only an OK on the netsend box :)

or copy this to a .cmd file

:LOOP
NET SEND {name} message

GOTO :LOOP

run it and send a slam attack.

You'll have to CTRL C to terminate the window.

Funny, that's exactly what I did as admin to anyone stupid enough to be dicking around with net send.

It's not that funny considering that the net send dialog box displays the computer the message came from.

I am the Sys. Admin where I work and we leave Winpopup and Net Send capabilities on our training machines so they can train on it depending on the account they work for. Well, occasionally I'll get a "computer/network guru" in a class and they'll send out something like, "Hello world" or some other lame ass computer skills from a "For Dummies" book quote to the entire place. Naturally, all the other machines have the service disabled or the app removed, all except for mine and my servers. Well, one time I was in a particularly bad mood and when I received a "Hello World" from some jackass, I replied back, "Do it again and I'll destroy your world, how's that?" Needless to say, his trainer came to me with him and he apologized. I didn't expect that, I was kinda being a sarcastic ass, but hey, it's nice to be respected, I mean feared, I mean respected. :)

Also, typing nbtstat -a <computername> will give you their username so you're fairly certain who the culprit is. Even if some jackass left their computer logged in and someone else did it from their login, at least you got someone to nuke for it.

Another note. Please don't send it to the entire damn domain! It's a pain in the ass having to click OK on all of those when you work on your 20+ servers.

Agreed. After the first couple it's not funny anymore.

That's why it's a new guy prank.

Back in the Novell Netware 2.11 days, the equivalent of today's Net Send command allowed you to backspace over the "From" part so you can change it to whatever or whoever you want. Also, our network printing service lets you set an option that notifies you when your print job finishes.

So, we used to send these messages to this one guy and it would freak him out. We'd send stuff like "Microsoft Word: Inventory.doc has finished printing." This guy would come into our office wondering why the printer sent him that message when he never printed such a document. He said he didn't even have a document with that filename.

So, we bump it up a notch. We started sending him messages like "Microsoft Word: Lingerie.doc has finished printing." And stuff like SatinSheets.doc. And so on.

Then we got into the really scary stuff like SexWithDeadPeople.doc and so on.

You get the picture...

I was using net send in my Networking 151 course this past semester. I would send stuff like, "Your computer has performed an illegal operation. Please contact your network administrator." It was funny when the students went to the professor asking them what had happened. Luckily she had a sense of humor and encouraged me to do it when she found out it was me. :D

Okay.... I've played around a few times with our network here.... I knew that there's a way to do what you guys are talking about, but I haven't sent popup messages over a network since back in my Unix days (17 years ago). Running Novell 3.30 here.... Could anyone point me in the right direction so I can learn more about networking, and in particular, things I can do with Novell?

Thanks!

Slightly off topic... but we hacked into a friend's box (using the C$ share in NT) and replaced his C compiler with a VB program that would reboot his box anytime he tried to compile a program...
