Net Neutrality voted down :(

Excerpt:

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Senate Commerce Committee approved sweeping communications reform legislation on Wednesday that would make it easier for telephone companies like AT&T Inc. to offer subscription television to consumers.

Any opinions on what'll happen if the telecom companies get their way?

They could start charging other companies for better service over their networks which could force price increases on one end of the spectrum.

But increasing competition in the cable tv market is always good. Verizon finished laying down their fiber optic wires in my neighborhood and they have their FiOS internet service available too, but as for TV, they are still fighting Cablevision and local townboards for cable franchise licenses.

God damnit, At&t is getting too big. I'm all for competition to let them provide cable, but we should put a lid on talks of tiered internet access while its still just talks.

I guess what it will boil down to is a lawsuit against the providers for not providing a "service" if they do make service truly more poor.

It's pretty much BS, they might as well start charging for how many minutes you use the internet each month.

anti-google commercial? Any links to it? I haven't seen it yet. Yeah I don't understand how they can restrict which sites we can access. Isn't that violation of the 1st amendment?

jebus people!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Learn how the Internet works.

You WANT this kind of stuff to be stricken down.

Let's put it this way, if you want this kind of crap passed you want to stop the advancement of the Internet.

Don't believe the hype.

Those in the industry literally laugh out loud at the ludicrous nature of such legislation.

jeez, It's like talking to people who thing Bush planned 9/11. Supporters of such a bill are far to ignorant/stupid to even have an opinion on it.

stop posting crap you know nothing about.

It ticks me off to no end to see this kind of crap spewed about, on a public forum no less. F'in ridiculous this is. Stop spreading the lies, learn how the Internet works and then post back.

*sigh* We don't need a "Net Neutrality" law.

Read some of the posts and some of the links posted in the "Lets all be sheep and sign this pointless petition" thread.

anyone remember reading how the government TORE APART the telecom monopoly in the early years of the century... seems they wanted to apologize and hand everything back over.. it seems they have gone unchecked in merging the corporations that spawned from the breakup of the monopoly (SBC, AT&T, I believe Bellsouth was in there somewhere someday). So Bell is returning and we are handing them even more power. Rejoice!

actually, yea... im an idiot because i kinda realized (after typing the above) voting down was the good thing.. i think... meh, either way Bell needs to be destroyed and have power taken away so we can reap benefits of cheaper service. 🙂

stop living in 1975.

nowadays the only real diffrence between the phone company, the cable operators, the electric company, and various wireless providers is what the government allows them to send over the wires (or radio waves) coming into your house. there is more competition for communication services than ever before.

You don't have to get your phone service from the RBOCs, you can get your service through a CLEC or a VOIP provider or join the growing portion of the population who have no landline.

Can someone explain how this would addect the average home user/gamer/downloader?
On top of the ISP fees to get onto the Internet you will have to pay for the use of individual sites such as Google, Yahoo etc.

Basically this puts the Internet onto a meter like your electric meter, water meter etc.

Enjoy

what dave really means is that the sky is falling.

what this means is that the status quo is intact. no need to have a law to regulate and stiffle the internet in response to rumors and shadows of *bad acts*, which, in the overall scheme of things: a) might not happen, b) if they do happen and are bad, the marketplace will react and the ISPs that do it will be punished at their bottom line, c) if they happen and aren't bad to end users, and actually benefit end users, then a good thing happened.

heck, one of these 'net neutrality' amendments essentially outlawed selling tiered broadband services. crappy slow DSL for all, eh dave?

Not surprisingly, you have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. Do you just pull this stuff out of your ass? 😕 Why do you even bother commenting on something you don't understand?

actually it's the other way around. google and yahoo will be charged fees to provide their clients with priority access....
