Why isn't the .NET framework built into Windows or even SP2? Does it conflict with other software? I'm running into more and more software that requires the .NET framework including the new ATI Catalyst driver suite.

Maybe they wanted to save some bandwight. The .NET framework is a hefty download.

.NET was released after XP, but I am surprised that it's not included in SP2.

I, too, am surprised that .NET was not included with SP2. I fully expected it to be. It would be interesting to hear from someone at MS on this issue.

This might help understand a bit.. XP SP2 was already pretty big.. I think download size was probably a big factor.

It has nothing to do with download size. The reasons are entirely political/legal. It's complete BS as far as I'm concerned. You can develop some great applications in .NET but can't be ensured that everyone will have the framework installed. Then you have to deal with bootstrapping the framework install which just makes your app installers huge. grrr.... I don't know the details but have heard from very reliable sources from within MS that this is the case. Good thing I do all of my .NET development for intranet applications where we can have the nice IT department just push it out. Anyway, it will be included by default with Longhorn but until then we'll just have to deal with downloading it.
