Nero won't recognize burner as 16x

I bought the BF 16x burner for $20 at Staples. Came with Nero but it is only recognized as 8x, when everything on the box says 16x burn speed for DVD+/- R. It's a Digital Research, which I'm sure is just a re-badged drive, and I think I may need to upgrade the firmware. Is there a way to find out who made it, or should I return it?

It's independent of the disc. Nero's Infotool has the drive itself reporting that it's 8x read/8x write--the box clearly says on the side 16x read, 16x DVD-R, 16x DVD+R, 4x DL. I assume Infotool, from the information it provides, pulls that data from the firmware.

I'd like to update the firmware...but I need to know who made the drive. I know Digital Research sure didn't make the drive--it looks like no one has updated their website since 2002!! So I know it's a rebadge, but which brand? BenQ or Liteon would be my guesses, but I don't know what to look for on the drive to know.

I figured it out. Rather roundabout way, but since many might have picked up that BF special, I'll tell how so they can go directly to the site.
1. Digital Research truly doesn't seem to have updated their webpage since 2003. The fastest DVD writer they mention is a 4x. Contact link at the bottom mentions I/O Magic, so I figured it's the same company.
2. Went to I/O Magic's website, found their model which had the same specs.
3. Ran a search for that model, which suggested they were rebadged BTC drives.
4. Found firmware utility on BTC's site, which updated the firmware. Problem solved!
