NERO vs DirectCD

NERO won't coexist with the Adaptec software; EZ CD Creator and Direct CD. I have not used NERO before but hate to give up the funtionality of Direct CD. Is the multisession funtion in NERO essentially the same as Direct CD? Thanks

for some odd reason, adaptec easy cd creator and direct cd have problems with each other even tho theyre made by adaptec. basically on a lot of new dell machines we get in at work, the first thing we do is uninstall direct cd. do you have any problems with direct cd and easy cd creator?

No, I've never encountered a problem between Direct CD and EZ CD Creator. Both of my other machines have v2.5 of Direct CD and v3.5 of EZ CD Creator -- with whatever letter is the latest free update they offer for those pieces of software. Both pieces of software have been used without encountering a problem. On the v4.02 EZ CD Creator that came with the new Iomega CD burner I can't say whether it conflicted with the v3.01 Direct CD or not since I only ran the EZ CD Creator and have now taken both off of the new machine. I installed Nero v5.0.3.8 and am hoping that the multisession capability will be a replacement for the functionality of Direct CD. If anyone knows whether this is the case, please let me know.

PS to Fobside
Direct CD places itself in the startup files during installation. I always removed it from startup as soon as I installed it since I didn't use it very often and felt it was no inconvenience to start it when I needed it. The conflict may be related to the fact that Direct CD is running in the background when you start EZ CD Creator.

I believe the multi-session capability of Nero will not quite get you what you want in terms of the functionality of DirectCD. But it's reasonably close. My understanding is that it lets you "erase" files from CD-R discs, but, of course, you don't recover the space the files used. It just removes the references to those files from the TOC. You can use the same feature on CD-RW discs, and it STILL doesn't let you recover space -- until you reformat / erase the entire disc. At least that was how this software behaved on a friend's computer. She's pretty happy with Nero.

I just use Adaptec EasyCD Creator and DirectCD because they came with my HP cd writer. I'm up to version 4.03 and 3.03, respectively. They've worked fine for my purposes, so I just haven't bothered to look around.

BTW, I think the actual boxed version of Nero comes with a DirectCD-like packet writer called InCD, or something like that.

Jim

I use Nero and DirectCD together w/no problems.

I don't use the supplied copy of EZ CD Creator that came with the IoMega ZipCD.

I also have an HP - external 4/4/6 (slow bigtime!) I use the software it came with CD direct 2.0 and I keep having problems - lots of coasters. What happens is on Windows 98 and even now on Windows 2000 (2 diff computers, 2000 on a 2nd hard drive) is that as it nears the end of an exact copy from my cdrom to the HP is hangs up and won't finish. It even locks up my cdrom where I can't open it. I have to resart my computer to get my cdrom to even open. These are both Compaq computers. It seems this must be a software issue but who knows since its a Compaq! I have a newer version of CD Direct 4.0 that I haven't installed yet. Do you think this would help?

I really regret getting this burner but I've layed my bed ....

Tgirl, are you running anything in the background like anti-virus software when you burn? If so turn it off. Also look into your power management settings. Is your HD shutting down before you complete the burning process? Last check...Runs Scandisk and check for errors then run defrag. Defraging the HD will help slower burners out alot! i hope one of these suggestions helps! 😀

TGirl--I believe 4.* was supposed to solve many of the problems created by 3.*, so, I'm guessing it wouldn't hurt. My bro had 3.* and was having problems, and updating the ASPI layer (4.60 is the latest I've seen) solved the problems he was having.

Adaptec is supposed to have several forums which might discuss problems such as this.

BlackFlagg--Yes, Nero has an indepth help on their site. I downloaded it...seems like it was about 4MB, and I believe it was called something like HELPENG.EXE. It offers numerous possiblities to allow coexistance with other mastering programs, also. It even takes you through setting up a step-by-step dual boot Nero/Acraptec. Also, it lists files that are known to possibly conflict with Nero....not just from Adaptec, but also, Seagate Backup and others.

I know, because I recently removed them all from a g/f's system. At least Nero acknowledges that there are problems, and does offer possible solutions. Nice touch, IMO.

I put the software on a New HD with wk2 on it. It has nothing in the background because I don't get to use it very often (my son's). I put my own HD in his Compaq so I could install 2000 for school. I may have forgot to turn off the Power Mgmt on it, I'm not sure - I'll go check. On the other two systems, I made sure I did. Can you upgrade all the way up to the most current versions of the really outdated stuff that came with my HP USB External for free on the websites or must you purchase upgrade? Only got it in Nov. I'll check out both software sites to see. When I first bought it, the HP website didn't have any updates for me. Thanks for your help, folks!

I have two HP burners -- an 8110i and a 9110i. Both came with Adaptec software, Easy CD v3 and Direct CD v2. For these two packages at least the end of the line in free upgrades was EZ CD ver. 3.5c and DC ver. 2.5d. There were a couple of update patches, 1.03 and 1.04, issued for the EZ CD but they mainly added support for some more recent drives. To get to EZ CD ver. 4 or DC ver. 3 you will either have to purchase the Roxio upgrade or get them packaged with some newer drive -- such as the much talked about Iomega.

Ezcd created a startup process without telling me, I went into the msconfig ans disabled it. Since then everything works fine.
