Hi all,

I'm having a very weird and mystifying problem
with my Plextor CDRW drive (PX-W1210A - the
12/10/32x IDE model) and Nero 5.5.5.1. When I try
to burn close to full CDs (around 648 megs), it
almost always fails when the burn process reaches
86 or 87 percent done. I get this error sequence:
"Write error, Invalid writestate, Could not perform
EndTrack, Write/Simulation failed at 12x." At the
bottom of the error logs Nero generates for writes
or simulations, the two drivers I have listed are
'CDRALW2K.SYS' and 'ASPI32.SYS'.

System specs are at the bottom of this post. I'm
using Sony 700 meg CDRs - and this failure does
not happen when I burn CDs that are not filled to
capacity. I'm running WinXP Pro, and I was able to
burn full CDs from my hard drive successfully for
several months before this error started appearing
two weeks ago. I've tried writing at every speed
from 1x to 12x, and I've upgraded the Plextor
firmware.

I'm completely baffled, and any help would GREATLY
be appreciated.

Specs:
Athlon XP1800
Abit KR7A-RAID
2 sticks of Crucial 256MB RAM
Western Digital WD800BB HD
Plextor PX-W1210A CDRW
Toshiba SD-M1402 DVD
Visiontek GeForce3 TI200
Diamond MX300 sound card
NetGear Ethernet card
Macron 400W PS (AMD approved)

I've gotten this error before and it pisses me off. I think that you should try some other CD-Rs and see if that changes anything, because Sony CD-Rs suck. I think there is a newer version of Nero out (5.5.7.8) so you might want to give that a shot. Hope this helps, and welcome to Anandtech :D

Hey, thanks for the reply.
I have tried different versions of Nero, with
no success. I used to swear by Sony CD-Rs...
Oh well - what brands do people recommend?

Muchas gracias,
GM

I used to also, but after reading a review on CD-Rs from CNET, Sony ended up being the worse :frown: Most members will recommend Fuji (manufactured by Taiyo Yuden). You can tell whether they're Taiyo Yudens by looking on the spindle. It should say made in Japan. These are probably the best CD-Rs out there, or any made by Taiyo Yuden.

I had the same thing happen years ago with a Memorex CDRW - I soon figured out that while 650mb is the max capacity for the CD, you can't actually get 650mb of raw data on there. There needs to be a bit of space left over for table of contents and formatting - there's no reason why this should take 2mb or more but its not just your CDRW drive or software. I have successfully burned 647mb disks, but not 648. Go figure.
