I am looking to improve replace a very old version of Nero...

I found the following at www.isellsurplus.com

Nero EOM: ~$10
Nero v6 Ultra edition: ~$20

and i know Nero v7 is ~$70 out there at various places....

is it worth the $50 to go with v7? I suspect that v6 Ultra Edition will suit me just fine and save some money for dics or other upgrades....

I read somewhere about there being Nero in bundle 1,2 or 3 (1 does do DVD or there are limitations on MP3s....) but the description says that the Ultra edition seems to be the full Nero v6 with:

- Make backups of ?non-copyrighted? DVDs without any visible loss of quality.
- Double layer DVD supported
- Fastest DVD 9 (Double Layer) to DVD 5 compression in the world!!!!
- Now featuring: Nero Digital, the world?s fastest MPEG-4 encoder- fit an entire movie on only one CD!
- Fit a whole movie on a normal blank DVD (4.8 GB) with 5.1 Dolby surround sound and same great quality
- Unlimited MP3 and High Efficiency. AAC (MPEG-4) encoder included
- Personalize DVD movies: Add new content, change, subtitles, preview in real-time

EDIT: just to ay I will be using this for burning MP3s, making CDs, burning DVD copies, copying VHS to DVD...standard stuff...I have an NEC-3550A with Dual Layer

Any comments or suggestions?

I had been using Nero 6 for quite some time and really like it. However I just did a clean system install over Christmas and decided it was a good time to upgrade to Nero 7. I bought it directly from the Nero site and because I bought Nero 6, the upgrade ran $50.

So far I have just burnt a few disks and converted a few xvids to DVD. The interface seems very similar to Nero 6 and I haven't noticed any major differences. I had run into some crashes with Nero 6 when converting Xvids to DVD, but so far haven't seen this with Nero 7.

The one great thing about Nero is that it is updated regularly. Now would be a good time to purchase 7, because you will get free updates as long as it doesn't jump to 8 (which is unlikely for quite a while).

Yes, you can pirate it. But supposing you're an honest man, should you pay all that money for Nero at all? And if so, which version?

I can't speak for v.5, but I have v.6.6 and it rocks. The only feature it seems to be missing is CDG support, and I don't think v.7 has that, either. So, my tentative suggestion would be to stick to v.6, and not spend the extra $50-$60 for v.7.

However, there are a bunch of free tools out there which could save you all of your money. Do a quick search and I'm sure you'll come up with some great stuff. It may not be quite as slick and user-friendly as Nero, but it should get the job done.

Darn. I just burned a DVD of pictures of my granddaughter, and another with the ISO of the latest Vista release. Wonder what burner program got added to my system that looks just like Nero 6 Ultra??

Nero6 Ultra is excellent. That's all you really need.
I've now pgraded to 7.0 Premium, but it's pretty much the same with some extra crap apps thrown in that I'll never use.
