Trying to burn some data discs for backup. But when I start nero to burn, i get an illegal disc error. I'm using a pack of sony dvd-r's, the first 4-5 i tried give the same error.

Drag-and-drop burning doesn't work either. Supposedly my burner CAN indeed burn dvd-r's, so i'm not sure what's going on. Am i missing something?

burner is: NEC Black IDE DVD Burner Model ND-2500A - OEM

DVDs are: 8x DVD-R Media, 120 Minute
/ 4.7GB, Spindle, 50 Pack

If you have more than one recorder make sure that you choose the correct recorder (CTRL + R)

Also be sure that you have selected to burn a DVD (ISO)/Data DVD not a CD (ISO)/Data CD

I had the same problem and what fix it is an updated Nero Software.

Yes, there are regular updates to nero that are DLable - check what version no. you have and go to nero.com to see if a newer one is available.

Try deleting your drive from device manager and let it be re-detected. Also, some games use StarForce copy protection which will screw with burners - get rid of it.

One more thing to try if all else fails, install the ASPI layer software that comes with Nero and see if that helps. Or you can DL the ASPI layer software from Adaptec - either will work, but I like to use the adaptec as it is more generic. It also comes with a neat utility (ASPIchk) that will tell you if an ASPI layer is already installed and what version it is.

Possibly a media incompatibility.

My Memorex (Ritek) DVD-Rs would not burn on my hp DVD burner, yet it supports both DVD-R and DVD+R. The same brand and DVD+R worked just fine.

Instead of "drive manager", I meant Device Manager in my earlier post - now corrected.

You can get updates to Nero thru http://www.majorgeeks.com as well as direct from Nero. The latest version mentioned at Major Geeks is: 7.0.5.4. My God! The update to 7.0.5.4 is over 100MB - the full trial version is only ~ 400MB. Sheesh...

Yeah, firmware updates, besides fixing bugs, are supposed to also contain write protocols for new media and perhaps tweaks for existing media definitions. One situation where I recommend updating with each new version - but give it about a week for any potential newly introduced gotchas to be detected and removed.
