Nero broke in Win2k and WinXP

I have a Plexwriter 8/4/32A and latest Nero (5.5.8 I believe?). Problem originally started in Win2k, where nero would just stop burning, the read/write light on the drive would go off, and I can't close Nero... but it's not frozen, I can't ctrl+alt+del either.

This, plus recieving a new hard drive, was the reason I did a clean install of WinXP. I get the same problem now, but worse. The process stops at 2% simulation, and I can't terminate Nero. Other programs cease to work as well, but nothing "freezes". I can't do things such as save files, open IE6, or restart the computer thru the Shutdown menu.

WinXP is up-to-date with Windows Update. WinXP burning feature has been disabled. The burner works in other programs, such as CDRWIN and CDMate, but I love Nero too much to let this go unfixed. Any ideas, folks?

I've got Nero running on a Win2K system with no problems. How much memory in the system?
When you installed XP you did a clean, repartitioned, install, not an upgrade.

192mb ram. I forgot to mention, for the longest time, Nero did work. Then this happened out of no where.

To install WinXP i formatted an 80gb HD, and partitioned 8mb for C

I'd bet it's something you loaded after Nero that's the culprit.

make sure you are logged in with administrator privileges in win 2k. if you are in the class of user or power user, it will not work--if you have to be Administrator class in order to run the direct drive commands that nero uses.
